The Summer I Turned Pretty is an American coming-of-age multigenerational drama Original Series on Prime Video. It is a television adaptation of Jenny Han’s best-selling YA series The Summer I Turned Pretty Trilogy. It was created by the author of the book series Jenny Han.

The series premiered on June 17, 2022, with the first season consisting of seven episodes. Ahead of the series premiere, it was renewed for a second season. The second season, consisting of eight episodes, was released on July 14, 2023. On August 3, 2023, it was renewed for a third season, consisting of 11 episodes, which marks the first season to have double digit episodes.[1]

Synopsis

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a multigenerational drama that hinges on a love triangle between one girl and two brothers, the ever-evolving relationship between mothers and their children, and the enduring power of strong female friendship. It is a coming-of-age story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer.

It was announced on Jenny Han's official Tumblr page that The Summer I Turned Pretty series has been optioned by Lionsgate TV (Nashville, Mad Men, Weeds, Wildfire) and Allison Shearmur Productions. The trilogy is set to be made into a TV series by Holly McGhee of Pippin Properties and Jason Dravis of Montiero-Rose-Dravis.

On February 8, 2021, it was announced that Amazon Studios had ordered a television adaptation of Jenny Han’s best-selling YA series The Summer I Turned Pretty. The series is co-production between Amazon Studios and wiip, the series is showrun by Han, who also wrote the pilot, and Gabrielle Stanton. Han, Stanton, and Karen Rosenfelt will serve as executive producers along with Hope Hartman, Nne Ebong and Paul Lee.[2]

According to Production Weekly, a third season is in active development at Amazon Studios. Filming is set from July 6, 2023 until November 2023.[3][4] The third season, which probably can't be announced, would be set around the third book: We'll Always Have Summer, in the trilogy series. On August 2, 2023, multiple accounts for The Summer I Turned Pretty posted a new poster for the season with the caption: "we'll always have summer."[5] Many fans suspect that a third season will either be announced soon, and it was officially announced on August 3.[6]

Casting

April 28, 2021, Lola Tung, Rachel Blanchard, Jackie Chung and Christopher Briney were cast as series regulars.[7] July 20, 2021, Gavin Casalegno joined the cast as a series regular.[8] July 26, 2021, Sean Kaufman, Minnie Mills and Alfredo Narciso are set as series regulars. Additionally, Summer Madison, David Iacono, Rain Spencer and Tom Everett Scott will recur.[9]

Filming

Principal photography for the first season took place in 2021 in Wilmington, North Carolina, locations included Carolina Beach, Fort Fisher, and Wave Transit's Padgett Station on N. 3rd Street.

  • The series was renewed for a second season ahead of its first season premiere.
  • Jenny Han changed Jeremiah's character to be bisexual for the adaptation, noting that if she were to write the novel today, she might have canonically written him that way. While the character is labeled as bisexual, she hopes to explore his fluidity more, not wanting to label him completely.[11]
