Isabel Susannah "Belly" Conklin is the main protagonist in the Amazon Prime Video original series, The Summer I Turned Pretty. She is portrayed by Lola Tung.
Belly used to be gawky and awkward, but when she turns 16 she is starting to turn heads-and it’s taking some getting used to. Conrad Fisher, the boy she’s loved forever, the boy who never even looked in her direction - is paying attention to her. It’s exhilarating to suddenly be an object of desire… but it’s also scary.
Last summer Belly grew up in all kinds of ways– she fell in love, had her heart broken, and she broke some hearts too. This summer, she must face the aftermath of those decisions and a Cousins Beach that might never be the same.
Biography[]
Belly is the youngest child of Laurel Park and John Conklin. She is the younger sister of Steven Conklin. From the time she was a child, she and her family would spend their Summers at Cousins Beach with the Fisher family. Each summer was different and exciting, with Belly growing closer to the Fisher brothers each year. She developed a crush on the eldest brother, Conrad, around the age of 12.[1]
During her fifteenth summer, a drunk Jeremiah and Conrad dared an also drunk Steven to pee in the fireplace, which subsequently, stunk up the house for days. Laurel blamed the neighbor's cat for the incident.[2]
Throughout The Summer I Turned Pretty[]
Season 1[]
Belly's family has been going to Susannah's beach house in Cousins ever since she was a baby, even before she was born. All year long, she counts the days until she's in that house. The dads come to visit but it's not their place. They don't belong to it. Not the way the moms and kids do. The summer house is made up of a lot of things; the beach, the swimming pool where she takes late night swims, movie nights with the moms, but most of all, the boys. Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher are the sons of Susannah who shine light on Belly's summers. Her brother Steven causes mischief. Now, Belly prepares to leave for another summer at the house. She packs her belongings as her best friend Taylor chats about boys, volleyball, and critiques her choices in swimwear. She wants Belly to show off her new boobs by packing cute things. The girls playfully tussle on the bed until Laurel calls for them to leave soon. Taylor wants Belly's summer wish - the one thing she wants to happen this summer. Belly lies that she doesn't know but Taylor knows the truth - it's a hot make out with Conrad Fisher. She's been in love with him since she was 12 and needs to act on it or move on. This might be the year Conrad notices her. After all, she looks a lot different this summer. Belly, Laurel, and Steven drive to the beach while Laurel asks them to help out more this summer. Doing the dishes even if it's not theirs and be good houseguests. Steven brings up Susannah having people that do that, earning a smack in the back of the head from Laurel. She wants them to be considerate. She gives Steven a curfew but tells Belly they'll worry about hers when it comes up. Steven digs that she doesn't need one as she doesn't go anywhere. Belly also has driving plans with Steven; he's less judgy than Laurel. They stop at a gas station where an attendant takes notice of Belly and invites her to the bonfire that night, so she agrees to think about it. Laurel intervenes to remind Belly about them going to a bookstore for pre-signing. She will let Belly pick out tonight's dessert if she comes with. The family arrives at the beach house. Belly's appearance surprises Jeremiah but he scoops her up and spins her around anyway. Conrad says he likes her better with glasses, but she retorts that likes herself better without them. Jeremiah and Steven declare it's time for a belly flop. The boys chase Belly until the grab her, carry her to the pool, and throw her in. She feigns a sprained ankle to trick Conrad into helping her. She pulls him into the pool. Inside, Laurel scoffs at Susannah for buying too much food. Belly comes inside soaking wet. Susannah tells her she is gorgeous. She's growing up and is in bloom. She looks just like Laurel did when she was Belly's age. Laurel reminds Belly to call her father. Belly asks why Steven can't do it. Laurel tells her to do it because she asked her to. Belly learns her father is coming to the house for the Fourth. His first time back since their divorce. But for now, it's just the women and children - they way they like it. Belly brings her stuff to her room and admires her bear, Junior Mint. Jeremiah walks in and is surprised she still has it. He wants to go for a swim with her as he's waited all day for her to come so they can go into the ocean together. He pleads and pleas until she caves. Jeremiah and Belly head to the beach as she catches him up on her parents' situation. Her dad is dating someone, has a beard, and is coming up for the Fourth. Jeremiah and Belly race to the ocean and jump into the water, playing together happily. The families sit for dinner. Laurel critiques Steven for being on his phone as she wants a screen-free zone. The boys joke about their physiques until Steven asks Conrad when he leaves for training camp. Jeremiah reveals that Conrad quit football, shocking the Conklin-Park family. Conrad isn't fazed as he was just going to sit on the bench all season and isn't changing his mind about quitting, either. He doesn't have any other plans for the summer, refusing Steven's suggestion to work at the country club with him and Jere. Susannah gives Belly a surprise: an invitation to the debutante ball. It's when a girl comes of age and is presented to society, an event that's more fun than it sounds. Girls come from all over and it's a good place for Belly to meet new friends. Laurel balks at the archaic dream, but Susannah says it's more about networking, getting leadership skills, and benefitting charity. Steven laughs at the idea of Belly being mature - citing a recent cat funeral as evidence of her immaturity. Laurel doesn't think Belly would like it, though Belly agrees to think about it. After dinner, Laurel asks Belly for help with Instagram, showing her Cleveland Castillo's profile that has 150,000 followers. Taylor's father reads his book, too. Belly goes for a night swim while Conrad sits by the edge smoking pot. She recites his previous criticism of smoking pot, expressing her disapproval through his words. He exasperatedly asks if she memorizes everything he's ever said. She tells him to get over himself, but still thinks he should quit. He asks what she'll give him in return, but he should do it for himself. He wonders why she's considering the debutante thing as it isn't her. She isn't sure but doesn't have much else going on. He doesn't want his mom to make her a little doll because she never had a daughter herself. Belly confronts him for acting differently this summer. He tries to deny it but she knows him. He begins to tell her until Jeremiah and Steven burst outside, ready for the bonfire. Belly wants to accompany them but Steven refuses to let her come. Jere tells her the moms are setting up for their annual movie night. Once the boys leave, Belly goes inside where she admits to wanting to do something different from their tradition of watching It Happened One Night. She decides to go to bed instead. She calls Taylor to vent about things feeling different between her and Conrad that night. Taylor encourages her to attend the bonfire - she might not like the guy who invited her but Conrad will be there. He can see her looking cute. Taylor even snuck a secret weapon into Belly's bag. She agrees to go and sneaks out of the house, pausing to watch her mom and Susannah watch a movie while curled up on the couch. Belly attends the bonfire when gas station boy greets her. She lies that she came from another party but turns down his offer for a beer. He asks if she has a boyfriend and she doesn't. She greets Steven who is with a girl. He lashes out at her for coming and wearing the dress. He criticizes the boy she's with as Belly is 15, though she protests that she's almost 16. Steven grabs her arm to take her away but she refuses to leave. He calls her embarrassing so she yanks her arm away, ultimately falling to the ground. Conrad looks up from making out with a girl wearing a Red Sox cap. Belly thought he hated the Red Sox. The girl is Nicole Richardson, the girl Conrad took to the deb ball last Summer. Belly counters that Conrad told her deb balls are bullshit and debs are sheep. He calls her a brat so she calls him an asshole. Jere jogs over, happy to see Belly as they can all hang out together. Steven plans to take her home until Jere tells him to chill out and hang with Shayla. Steven complies and leaves. Jere admits he's happy she's there but leaves to hang out with another girl who calls him over.Belly sits alone on the beach when a boy greets her as Flavia, introducing himself as Sextus. They were in a seventh grade Latin convention together; she placed second in the poem recitation. He introduces himself as Cam, so she invites him to sit with her. He's from Cousins but doesn't remember seeing her before, though she admits to sticking close to home. She doesn't know anybody other than her family. He remarks that she knows him now. He sees that she's cold and offers his hoodie, which she accepts after some playful banter. She asks if everyone saw her fall before - they did. Her brother is a dick. Cam asks if one of the other boys she talked to is her boyfriend but they aren't. They're mad she came but he's happy to see her. As they talk, he reveals he works at the country club so they talk about the deb ball. He admits it isn't total garbage as they do a fundraiser each year - Elizabeth Warren showed up last year. He has to leave early for a whale-watching boat and begins to ask her to come. Belly gets distracted when she sees Conrad's impending fight on the beach. She apologizes, tells Cam to stay put, and rushes off to help Conrad. She tries to diffuse the situation but ends up getting elbowed in the face. Jeremiah intervenes to see if she's okay, while Conrad returns to the fight. The cops show up so everyone disperses. Jere puts Conrad in the back of his car and tells Belly to get in. She wants Cam to give her a ride home but Jere refuses to let her get in a car with a guy she just met. He introduces himself as Cam, correcting to Cameron, so Jeremiah jabs that his name is "Cam Cameron". Belly argues that they aren't total strangers as they met in the seventh grade. Jere is unmoving in his position and tells her to get in the car. Cam concedes that she should go but invites her to the whale-watching boat at dawn. She agrees to come - after all, he'll need his hoodie back. Belly secretly wonders if this is her summer wish - this night, this boy. She kisses him then gets in the car. They start to leave when Jere remembers Steven. He runs out to find him, leaving Belly and Conrad alone. He remarks that her hair is like a little kid's, the way it's always messy. He touches her hair, making her shudder. A cop knocks on the window to ask if they've been drinking. The kids are dropped off at home by a police officer. Steven argues that it's not a big deal but Laurel disagrees; getting arrested for underage drinking is a big deal. Steven asks if the moms have been smoking, but Laurel lies that they haven't. Laurel warns to keep their voices down as Susannah is asleep. Jere reveals that he was the DD tonight. Laurel scolds Conrad for being the oldest but not having responsibility. She turns to Belly, wondering when she left the house and what she's wearing. She walked to the beach. which Laurel dislikes, prompting Belly to lash out that she's not a kid anymore. If they want to be treated like adults they should act like one. Tonight could have ended differently if the Fishers weren't the Fishers. Belly lays in bed with her stuffed bear while Jeremiah lays in the next room. He knocks softly on their shared wall, earning a knock in return that makes them both smile. Belly knows things change whether she wants them to or not, wondering if she'll change, too. By dawn, Belly goes to the beach where she sits with Conrad. She had fun last night but he calls it a shit show. She'll have a black eye tomorrow, too. She asks if he remembers anything from last night. He always remembers everything when he drinks. She asks for a puff of his weed but he refuses. They go back and forth with "no" and "yes" until Conrad admits that Laurel would kill him. She proclaims that if she can't smoke, then he can't smoke. She's the same old Belly. He wants to pick up some muffins before the others get up, but she has somewhere to be - she has to see a whale. He questions what that means but she runs off, ignoring him. She thought this summer was going to be like every summer, but it's not, because she won't let it.[1] Belly misses the whale watching boat, a metaphor she equates to her life. She returns to the Beach House and Laurel notices the bruise on her face, though she lies that she bumped into someone. Jeremiah offers her cereal that she accepts. Susannah bursts in, full of glee, as Belly is going to be a deb, after all. She can't wait to go shopping for both Belly and Laurel, as the latter needs a new style for her book party. Conrad doesn't think the deb is Belly at all. Susannah asks which of the boys will be her escort. Conrad refuses as he went last year; Jeremiah refuses as he hates balls. Belly isn't going with either of them; she's going to find her own date. Laurel is skeptical that the country club can teach morals, though Susannah thinks times are changing. There's a lesbian couple this season that the club is fine with. The girls prepare for shopping while the boys head to work. The girls have a blast shopping as they turn their attention to fascinators, little hats that all the girls will be wearing. Belly isn't sure about them but Susannah encourages her to try them anyway. Belly tries on different dresses until she finds one that Susannah falls in love with, thinking she looks like a princess. Laurel equates her to the tooth fairy, which doesn't faze Susannah. Laurel suggests a simpler dress, but Susannah thinks the one she points out is too simple as the girls go all out. Belly is drawn to the simpler gown but stays quiet. Laurel drops Belly off at the country club but promises to be there in a hurry if she's needed. Belly repeats their code phrase, "Lemon Jelly Belly", before heading towards the club. She calls out to Jeremiah who doesn't recognize her at first. She worries she looks like a fool but he thinks she looks good. He offers to walk her over, remarking on the pineapples on her dress, but she argues they're flowers. They reach the deb tea and Paige, the instructor, wonders where Jeremiah's shirt is. He ignores the remark and introduces Belly as the young woman his mom told her about, who is also his future wife. Belly slaps him playfully for the remark. Paige remarks that Belly is late, which throws her off for a moment. Jeremiah steals a sandwich from the table despite it being for the girls. He wishes Belly luck then scurries off. Belly takes a seat at the table with the girls who were talking to Conrad and Steven at the bonfire. Shayla offers to fix Belly's black eye with her makeup and does so perfectly. The deb girls converse. Marisa thought she could get out of the ordeal by insisting she bring her girlfriend, but the club was surprisingly chill. She was expecting a conversion camp to spring out of the bushes, as lesbians and debutantes are juxtaposing ideas. She's only doing these things for college applications, anyway. Belly asks where she's applying. Marisa says she's apply to all of the Ivy schools minus Cornell. She asks Belly where she's applying, but Nicole interjects that Belly is only a sophomore, at least, that's what Conrad told her. Belly corrects that she'll be a junior in the fall. This isn't her first summer in Cousins as she's family friends with Conrad and Jeremiah. Gigi asks if she and Jeremiah are going to the ball together, but Nicole assures her they have nothing to worry about as Belly is practically related to the Fishers. Shayla isn't interested in Jeremiah as she's into the waiter, who Nicole interjects is Belly's brother. Paige begins the meeting by introducing them to the idea of the debutante ball. Each girl will have a "big sister" to guide them through the season. As Paige talks, the girls at Belly's table pass around a flask, the contents of which they add to their tea. Nicole greets Belly as she's the big sister this year. Nicole starts explaining the process when Belly sees Cam. She quickly leaves to talk with him. She stops Cam in the hall and explains that she's technically a deb. She went to the marina yesterday but his boat had already left. If he'd looked behind him he would have seen a sweaty version of her looking wistfully toward his boat. He doesn't want her to be wistful but the wistfulness has set in. She might be wistful forever, now. He wonders if going to a drive-in movie tonight would help her wistfulness, and she thinks it would. That evening, Susannah compliments Belly's attire, hoping she'll have fun tonight. Laurel is confused as she thought Belly would drive with them tonight. Susannah reveals that she has a date with a the son of a woman who works at the club. He's a nice boy and very smart. Laurel lets her go but makes sure to remind her about consent as she leaves. Steven, Conrad, and Jeremiah play video games while Belly waves goodbye to them. Jeremiah instantly stands up and says she looks hot. Steven snipes at Jere to stop flirting with his sister. She isn't going to the book party but to the drive-in, but doesn't tell them with whom. She joins Cam in the car where he remarks on her looking less wistful. They're going to see an old movie called Sabrina, which she recognizes. They watch the movie in silence, which is a little awkward. As Audrey Hepburn delivers her monologues, Belly and Cam's hands inch closer together until they become intertwined. She asks him why he chose marine biology. There are many inexplicable things about the ocean. He wants to be able to explain them, some of them. The two share a moment and nearly kiss. Her inner voice reminds her that she's only kissed boys during spin the bottle, not in real life, not because they both wanted it. But the way she feels in this moment is what everyone talks about. Moments before they kiss, Belly sees Steven, Conrad, and Jeremiah pull up in their car. She quickly asks Cam to get her a drink so he does. Once Cam is gone, she angrily confronts the boys. They have no right and need to leave. He tells her to relax as they were just joking around. She threatens to tell everyone about his Dramione fanfic. The Fisher boys laugh at the idea, with Jeremiah teasing that he shouldn't be embarrassed, Draco's hot. Belly again asks them to please leave. Conrad decides it's time to go, which annoys Steven, as Conrad is the one who wanted to come. The car speeds off as Conrad watches Belly's look of betrayal and anger. Back in the car, Belly thanks a recently returned Cam for the soda. He drives her home and she thanks him for the great time, lying that she was just dehydrated before. She's very hydrated now. He asks if he can kiss her and she nervously accepts. They kiss for a moment, even unbuckling their seat belts, before she leaves to go back inside. Belly says goodnight to Cam and goes inside, where Conrad is waiting in the kitchen. He asks how her hot date was, then tells her to relax when she gets angry at him for coming. All she wanted was to go to a drive-in with a guy that she thinks is cute and sweet, but they had to come and ruin it. He doubts them showing up for two minutes ruined it. He says she should grow up. Belly doesn't understand why he couldn't let her have this one thing. She wants him to admit what he was doing, which confuses him so she elaborates. He was reminding her that he existed. He cared about where she was and who she was with. He denies it so she yells at him to stop lying. He counters by telling her to stop being such a baby. He's not an adult either as he spent his Saturday crashing her first date for fun. He tells her to forget it. She snaps at him to go smoke some more pot. He angrily tells her to go look in the mirror some more and she stalks out of the kitchen. She wonders if this the way all crushes die. With a whimper, slowly, and then, just like that, gone.[3] Every birthday Belly has is in Cousins, and it's always the same. Laurel makes Mickey Mouse pancakes, everyone gives her presents, and it's the one day of the year where the boys have to include her in everything. One year, Conrad uses syrup to draw an infinity symbol on her pancakes. He explains that he learned about it in math class. There's no start or end point, it just goes on forever - that's infinity. Belly comes down to her traditional breakfast, everyone wishing her a happy birthday, and complimenting her. She refuses the pancakes as she isn't hungry, so Laurel suggests they open presents instead. Laurel gives her a first edition book of poems, with her favorite bookmarked; everyone recites it from heart. Susannah gifts her a pearl necklace that once belonged to her mother. Jeremiah gives her a good luck charm for her keys, so she'll pass her driving test. Steven gives her a Princeton sweatshirt so she won't steal his next years, though Laurel didn't know he was still considering Princeton. He's looking to scholarships and financial aid. Conrad starts to remove a box from his pocket but decides against it. He tells Belly her forgot her birthday, and she feigns as though she isn't expecting something. He leaves for a lesson with Cleveland. Jeremiah offers to take Belly for a driving lesson to pick up Taylor from the bus station. Belly, while excited to see Taylor, is also uneasy as she's always felt like the supporting character around her. It's her birthday, so he assures her that she's the main character. Taylor arrives from the bus with a bouquet of balloons for Belly. She teases that Belly looks like a snack, which Jeremiah agrees with. He takes her bag for her and she calls him Jeremy, as she likes that better than Jeremiah. The trio stop to get ice cream on the way home, where Taylor gives Belly her birthday present - a purple bikini. Jeremiah doesn't think Belly would ever wear it, but Belly likes it. Taylor asks where the party is as they have to go out. Belly is happy to stay home with Susannah who planned a Midsommar theme with flower crowns. Cam will be at the dinner too, which excites Taylor as he finally got Belly off her old crush. To distract from the mention of her old crush, Belly suggests going to Nicole's big blowout at her place after dinner. Taylor wants to go back to the house to swim. Back at the house, Taylor gushes over Belly in her new bikini, noting that Conrad will lose his mind when he sees her. Belly doesn't think so as he didn't even get her a birthday present. Steven and Jeremiah talk in the pool about his relationship with Shayla. The girls tease them for their gossiping before Taylor suggests playing chicken. Taylor calls dibs on Jeremiah, though Steven's complaining over having to shoulder Belly prompts a switch. As the game unfolds, Jeremiah and Belly are in the lead, with the foursome having a fun time. Conrad arrives with Nicole, who greets Belly with a happy birthday. Belly introduces Taylor to Nicole, noting that playing chicken was her idea. Belly asks if they want to play a real game. They face-off against one another in boys-against-girls pool volleyball. They have fun together until Taylor volleys the ball into Nicole's forehead. Taylor remarks that it was an accident but Belly makes sure Taylor is okay. She says she fine but her and Conrad go inside to get some ice. Taylor stops Belly from helping, as Conrad can take care of her. They should go inside and look at themselves in the mirror some more. He pauses then tells them to have fun with that. Once inside, Taylor admits that she doesn't know what to think of Belly this summer, as she's suddenly caring about clothes, has new friends, and a boyfriend. Belly wanted this summer to be different. Taylor asks her to promise they'll always best friends, a promise that she happily makes. The family sits for dinner, including Cam and Taylor. Jeremiah decides to call him Cam-Cameron as it's funny. Susannah's glad he's here as she knows his mom from the club. He thanks her for having him, passing on his mom's hello. Laurel asks if he's ever had miyeok-guk before, which he hasn't, though it's a Korean birthday tradition. She made it vegetarian since he doesn't eat meat. He's grateful for that. Jeremiah asks why he doesn't eat meat. Cam explains that it's the number one contributor to global warming. As the teasing commences on Belly for eating meat, Cam intervenes that he doesn't judge people for eating meat. It's a personal choice. Steven jabs that Cam must not mind Belly's lips touching a dead animal, then those dead animal lips touching his. Cam doesn't mind at all and kisses Belly to prove that. The siblings go back and forth with embarrassing childhood stories, something Belly seemingly wins as Jeremiah helps with the stories. After things settle, Belly decides they should go to Nicole's party, a sentiment that excites Taylor. Taylor and Belly prepare for the party, ultimately deciding to wear the Midsommar crowns to the party. Belly, Cam, and Taylor arrive to the party after the other boys. Nicole is glad that Belly came, gushes over her crown, and then ushers her off to show Gigi. Belly invites Taylor and Cam who both pass, with Taylor getting a drink. Nicole shows Belly the dessert table which is all for her, including a cake with a number 16 on it. She thanks them and Nicole couldn't miss her Sofia Coppola moment. Belly makes a wish on the candle. Gigi asks where Jeremiah is, and Belly spots him by the punch bowl. Gigi grills Belly about her relationship with Conrad, but Belly insists they aren't a thing - they're more of an "or what". She asks if he's been hanging out with other girls this summer. Belly assures the group that he hasn't as he's always off by himself. Nicole changes the topic by asking if she's invited Cam to the deb ball yet, but she's hasn't. Her plans was to do it before dinner but everyone was there. She should just ask him, with Gigi suggesting she do it in an empty bedroom so he'll have to say yes. Nicole laughs at the terrible plan. Belly eventually makes her way over to Cam and sits with him on the couch. Jeremiah sees the couple and decides to turn on the karaoke machine. He dedicates his song to Cam-Cameron and "our favorite little Belly Button". He proceeds to serenade Summer Nights from Grease. He tries to encourage Belly to sing with him but she refuses, so he goes back to the line Nicole, Gigi, and another girl have formed to do the signature snap. He points to Cam who joins him for the duet. After a moment, Belly sneaks off to find Taylor who has gone upstairs. Belly finds Taylor making out with Steven in an upstairs bedroom. Steven runs out of the room leaving the two girls to argue. She's in disbelief but Taylor swears it just happened. Belly argues that Taylor got bored as he's dating someone else, someone he actually likes. Taylor thinks she's saying he could never like someone like her, but she assures her that's not it. This could get messed up as he's taking another girl to the deb ball, a girl whose entire friends are downstairs. Taylor is tired of hearing about this deb ball - she doesn't even know who Belly is anymore. Belly challenges that she's not just going along with everything Taylor wants her to do. She asks if that's why Taylor threw herself at her brother. Taylor calls her self-absorbed as she's had a crush on Steven for years. If she wasn't so obsessed with Conrad she would know that. Belly tells her to keep her voice down as people could hear, though Taylor doesn't care as there's more than one story happening here. Belly just only cares about one - the one where she's the main character. Belly can't deal with it right now and leaves the room.Belly joins Jeremiah, Cam, Conrad, and Luke outside, with Jeremiah hugging her happily. She remarks on Cam drinking but he insists it's just water; Jeremiah's been drinking for him. Jere wraps his arm around Cam - he loves this kid so much. Belly asks if they can leave now, to which Cam quickly agrees. As the couple leaves, Cam asks if she's into Jeremiah, though she thinks he meant Conrad. He's sure that he meant Jeremiah as he got that vibe from them. She insists that there's nothing there as he likes to flirt with everyone. Susannah calls him a golden retriever, though she sees him as more of a border collie. Belly starts to ask him to the deb ball when she changes her mind, asking if it's weird to be the only one not drinking. He says it isn't but asks if that was all, and it is. The next morning, Belly joins Jeremiah in the kitchen for breakfast, downing Lucky Charms from the box. He surmises she hasn't made up with Tay-Tay yet. They haven't spoken since last night. She leaves in a couple of hours and is upstairs packing now. Jeremiah asks if she's down for a muffin run, which she's always down for. He has to put his smoothie in a to-go cup, so he asks her to get the keys from Conrad's room. He isn't home as he spent the night at Nicole's, though the keys should be in his desk. Once in his room, Belly opens his drawer, pushing aside the condoms. She finds a small black jewelry bag, which she opens. Inside is a box with an infinity necklace inside. She's happy to know he remembered infinity, but wonders if he knows that for him, she would've traveled endlessly around those curves. She puts the bag back inside the drawer.Jeremiah drives as she stares out the window. He asks if she's okay. She doesn't understand Conrad this summer because he's been acting weird since the day she got there. He assures her that Conrad's been acting weird for months, suggesting that she just forget him. He's happy she invited Cam as he's cool, but wonders if she asked him to the deb ball yet. She hasn't, so he explains that even though he and Steven gave him some shit, he does think Cam's cool. He starts to tell her something when Belly interrupts that Nicole really likes Conrad, and if he's not into her, then it's messed up. His sigh catches her attention, so he explains that last night she was all about Cam Cameron but today she's obsessing over Conrad. She wonders if his grumpiness has to do with Luke, but things went well between them, though he spares her the details. Laurel and Belly drop Taylor off at the bus station, with Laurel encouraging Belly to talk things through with her as they're best friends. After all, Taylor came all the way up to see her for her birthday because she loves her. Belly concedes and talks to Taylor just as the bus is loading. Taylor admits her hookup with Steven will never happen again as Steven said it was a mistake and they should have never gone there. Belly isn't mad, just weirded out and needs a minute to take it all in. When she returns to the car, Laurel tells her that boys might come and go, but a best friend is once in a lifetime. They have to hold tight to those friendships because they never know what the future will hold. Back at the beach house, Belly confronts Steven for making out with Taylor as she's her best friend. Not to mention the event traumatized her. Steven tells her to stop being so immature. Belly counters that Taylor really likes him, which Steven knows. He asks her not to tell anyone, specifically Shayla. She points out that, while he doesn't deserve to know it right now, Shayla likes him. He knows that too but like she's used to being with the kind of guys at Nicole's party, or guys that treat her like a queen. Belly doesn't understand, asking if him feeling insecure made him hook up with her best friend and, in a way, it did. Belly goes inside to eat her Mickey Mouse pancakes. She pours on the syrup, places a candle in the center, and lights it. She's wished for Conrad on every birthday, every shooting star, every penny in a fountain. But if she had the power to make her wish come true, she wonders if Conrad would still be her wish. She blows out the candle.[2] The Fourth of July in Cousins is all about traditions. Susannah decks out the whole house, the dads come up for the weekend, and the boys steam clams and shoot off fireworks. All the other Fourth of Julys, Belly was just tagging along. But this year, she has friends and plans. Conrad prepares to wash the clams, Jeremiah finishes his milk, and Steven finishes his portrait with Susannah. Laurel suggests taking Belly to the ball if she doesn't ask Cam, but he balks at the idea. He's also taking Shayla who will be coming over today with Nicole and Gigi. Belly plans to ask Cam to the ball today. Belly and Susannah tease Laurel over wearing makeup, attributing the rarity to John attending. Belly doesn't understand why she invited John's girlfriend. Laurel tells her to make the guest bed which is next to Belly's. Conrad helps Belly make the bed, as she doesn't know how to make the bed properly. He teaches her to do the 45-degree angle for tight corners. She wonders if this is what it would be like if they were together and older. She asks if he finds it weird that Victoria and John are staying at the house, but he jokes that they won't have loud sex. Belly calls her bitchy, but Conrad suggests she give her a chance as she might be a nice person. He tells her it will be fine. She's sorry his dad isn't coming, but he's not. A car honking outside signals the arrival of John and Victoria. Jeremiah, Belly, Steven, and Conrad watch from inside as their moms greet Victoria and John. Conrad comments that Victoria is hot, and Belly wonders why he'd say that. Conrad notes that she could be his future stepmom, but Steven isn't happy with the remark. They begin to playfully fight moments before the new couple enters. Belly and Steven hug their father, meet Victoria, then quietly comment on her being 27 and in grad school. John then reveals that he and Victoria are staying in town instead of at the house, with Laurel agreeing with whatever he thinks is best. Victoria takes out pomegranates as she plans to make margaritas later. The doorbell rings so Steven rushes off to greet Shayla, as the debs have arrived. Belly stands with her parents, Steven, and Shayla as they get to know the newcomer. When Shayla leaves, Laurel can't believe a girl like her would want to be a deb. John asks about renting a tux for Steven, but the boy claims he has it covered. Steven heads off to be with Shayla, so John asks Belly about the deb ball. Apparently, it's for girls like her who don't know who they are. Laurel didn't mean her remark like that, but Belly isn't convinced. Victoria interjects that her cousin was a deb and they raised money for public schools. Back inside the house, Belly tricks Victoria into letting her try a margarita, lying that her parents are fine with it. She lets Jeremiah try a sip of hers, and he remarks that it tastes like a Slurpee. She has an idea and asks him to help her with the pomegranates. Conrad enters and suggests using the good blender, which hasn't been used since the Kool-Aid debacle of 2011. He doesn't think Adam will be mad since he's not coming. She pours in the good tequila; Conrad laughs as she needs a lot more and helps her pour it in, earning laughs from everyone. Conrad misses watching Laurel put Adam in his place, mimicking Laurel's voice when she says his name. Seconds later, Laurel remarks that Adam came, as the man emerges from around the corner. Jere happily hugs his father, Belly gives him a drink, while Conrad stays quiet. Susannah enters and is surprised to see him there. Everyone goes back to the party at her request, while Conrad brushes off Adam's request to talk as he's going to the beach. Belly brings a pitcher of margaritas to the beach where Gigi, Shayla, Conrad, Nicole, and Steven have gathered. Jeremiah arrives with Cam, who takes a seat next to Belly. Nicole jokingly tells Conrad to slow down as it's not a race. Belly suggests making it a race since it's the Fourth of July, after all. The group plays, drinks, then dances, adding new liquor to the margaritas. The boys play cornhole while the girls dance. Belly continues to drink, now heavily intoxicated. Cam and Steven win against Conrad and Jeremiah. The group heads back to the house and sits at the pier. The girls talk about celebrities, with Shayla getting Steven to side with her, though the girls tease him about not knowing who they're talking about. Belly watches Conrad play football, an observation that Cam notices but stays quiet about. Nicole, Belly, and Shayla talk at the pier. Nicole doesn't understand Conrad as he's giving her mixed signals, especially about sex, which they haven't had yet. Belly assures her that he likes her as he talks about her all the time. Cam walks over with water for Belly, which she thinks is so sweet. He offers to go for a walk by the beach, his request is talked over by Shayla who compliments her dress - Taylor got it for her. Belly gushes over Taylor and Shayla being like twins as they both love fashion. They both even like the same boys, which throws Shayla off-guard for a moment. Cam tries again to get Belly to go for a walk but she brushes him off as she's talking. The kiss didn't mean anything as Steven pretty much loves Shayla. Belly decides she wants another drink, ignoring Cam's attempts to get her to stop talking. Belly's drunken ramblings chase everyone from the party. Cam decides to leave and suggests they catch up later, implying a time when she's less drunk. He suggests she drinks a lot of water despite her insistence that she's not drunk. He proceeds to leave the party too. Belly finds Conrad showering in the outside shower. Everyone else left but they still have margaritas to drink. He can't drink it in the shower, requesting that she leave it outside and he'll get it when he's done. She giggles while watching him shower. He asks if he can shower and they both chuckle. She's always liked him with wet hair as it's so romantic. He wonders what's so romantic about wet hair, but she resigns that he just doesn't get it. He scoffs and then asks how many drinks she's had. It's somewhere between two and five, which isn't important, a comment that makes him chuckle. She asks if he bought the infinity necklace for her birthday, which surprises him. His silence is her confirmation. She knew she was right. He asks for some privacy so she walks away.Belly wanders inside to Laurel who asks about the margarita, so Belly blames it on Victoria who said she could have it. Susannah enters as it's time for cake, which excites Belly so she hurries outside. In her hurry, she trips on the stairs and falls into Susannah, causing her to fall too. The platter shatters as the cake goes everywhere. Adam rushes to see if Susannah is okay while Laurel tends to Belly. Susannah angrily pushes Adam away from her telling him to just go away. She looks to Belly, disappointed, ignoring her apologies as she limps off to tend to her cut hand. John helps Belly to her feet and then takes her inside the house as she admits that Victoria is cool. After her nap, John brings Belly some pizza and water as he quells her fear that Susannah's mad at her. She knows mom probably is but he doesn't' think she has room to be mad, as one year ago, Susannah rented a margarita machine, whistling over the memory. The topic changes to John and Laurel's relationship, with Belly wondering if he still loves her. Part of him will always love her, but it's not as simple as Laurel falling out of love with him. Sometimes, people change and grow in different directions, which doesn't mean they stop loving each other. She asks where Laurel is and he tells her that she left after a fight with Susannah. Laurel goes back to the beach house, though Belly is in the kitchen, which startles her. Belly's having some cereal before bed. Laurel isn't planning to yell at Belly, who just wishes she could back in time and not barge in on Conrad in the shower. He wasn't naked as he wore a bathing suit, but she did tell him he looked romantic with wet hair. Laurel chuckles as she's glad Cam wasn't there. Laurel plans to make hangover soup for her to have in the morning. Belly admits she doesn't feel fireworks with Cam, a feeling that Laurel relates to, as she felt steady with John - like a cozy campfire that would keep her warm through the night. She did feel fireworks once but it never would have worked, as it would have burned them both alive. Belly will know when she wants to be with that person no matter what. Too hot, too safe, she won't care as it'll just feel right. Belly remarks that her mom's bow is untied. Belly puts on her bathing suit for a late night swim, but sees Conrad out at the dock watching the fireworks. She joins him, asking if everyone hates her now. He wonders who could ever hate her. She admits to thinking her mom just had sex, which surprises him, making him laugh. He remarks "go Laurel" as they both chuckle. They watch the fireworks, unaware that Jeremiah has come out of the house and is watching from the porch. Conrad starts to tell her about the necklace. She apologizes for bringing it up. He did get it for her but doesn't know why he didn't give it to her. He supposes that he got embarrassed, which confuses her. He sighs that she doesn't know the effect she has on people. She's confused as she doesn't know what he's talking about. He remarks that she does. They begin to move closer as if they are about to kiss. Two fireworks zoom past Conrad and Belly, interrupting their near-kiss and going off in the sky. They look back at the house as Jeremiah stalks back inside. Belly looks to Conrad, who remains stoic, looking at the water. She looks away just as he looks at her. They proceed to watch the fireworks in silence.[4] One of Belly's favorite memories of Summer in Cousins started with a song and ended with a boy. As a girl, she struggles to learn the moves to a song, asking Steven for help. He blows her off, but Conrad, who was playing chess with the boys, stops to show her. He explains that his mom taught him how to "shag". They hold hands as they successfully execute the dance moves until they bump into one another again. He offers his hand though she's nervous as hers is sweaty, he doesn't mind as he is too. They continue to dance. Now, Belly attends deb practice and rehearses the steps to the shag alone, as everyone else has a partner. She texts Conrad good morning, replacing the smiley face with a sun emoji. She then apologizes to Shayla for the mess yesterday. The couple is good despite her being a Tasmanian devil. Shayla understands as the first time she got drunk was a wreck, too. Paige calls the debs to attention to introduce their dance instructor, Ms. Covington. They will start with the waltz. As everyone partners off, Belly is left standing alone until Nicole joins her. Belly explains that her seven margaritas ruined her plan to ask Cam to the dance. Nicole offers to be her escort for the day, but she'll need a real one for the big night. The girls together as they discuss her skills and Nicole's escort last year bailing, which is why Conrad stepped in to save her. She admits that he left her on read last night, asking if Belly's seen him yet today. She flashes back to their near-kiss. She didn't see Conrad that morning as he was asleep when she left. They continue to practice until Belly steps on Nicole's foot. Jeremiah arrives and asks Nicole if he can have the dance, so Nicole gives Belly over. He takes over but she points out his see-through shirt, which can get them in trouble. Steven, seeing the scene, gives Jere his jacket. The two proceed to quickly waltz about the room as the other debs gossip about him not taking anything seriously, and how one of the girls had asked him to be her escort twice, but to no avail. Jeremiah asks Alexa to play "So Pretty", which changes the mood of the practice to something more fun and upbeat. Jeremiah dances with Belly and she pushes him playfully until he captivates the entire group. He tosses the jacket to Steven and proceeds to dance with Belly as the rest of the group picks up the pace. He spins her and they dance happily. Paige walks into the scene and tells Alexa to stop. She asks why he's not in the pool. He says they had a "code brown" and lost the keys to the chemical closet. She gives him her spare set to him and sends him on his way. He says bye to Belly before walking off. He passes Conrad on the way out. Belly sees him and he waves, making Belly wave back. She then notices that Nicole is standing in front of her, waving back at Conrad, and Belly realizes the wave might not have been meant for her. She looks at her phone to see a text from Conrad hoping to see her when she gets back. The girls resume their rehearsal. Belly goes back to the beach house where she finds Laurel and Susannah sitting out by the pool, talking. She asks about Conrad, learning he's out sailing. Just as Susannah invites Belly to join them, Cam arrives to check on Belly after the events of last night. He apologizes for leaving last night but she understands as she was a wreck. He asks her on a bike ride, bringing up a really cool spot he knows about. She agrees but has to change out of her deb outfit first. Cam takes Belly to the spot where he saw his first whale during a trip with his mom. He made sandwiches for them to have. Belly privately thinks he's so nice. She could hang out with him like this all summer and be really happy. But she can't help wishing she was there with Conrad. After a while, she spots a whale, which Cam identifies for her. He is ready to celebrate with dessert - Fruit Roll-Ups, her favorite. She can't and admits they are awesome and so is he. She stumbles through the next part and he grows solemn, as he kind of saw this coming when she didn't ask him to be her escort. She was planning on asking him but he doesn't need the whole speech. The why or the who doesn't really matter. He obviously knows the who. She didn't mean to hurt him and he knows that. He's bummed but he'll be fine. She should be with the person she really wants to be with, and he hopes that person treats her right. Belly returns to the beach house where she finds Jeremiah in a crown by the pool. His mom wants to paint him as Hermes, the messenger of the gods. She's looking for Conrad as she thought he would be back by now. He asks where she's been so she tells him about her picnic with Cam. She doesn't think they're going to hang out anymore. He feels bad for Cam-Cameron. She chuckles that he was never going to let that go, and he wasn't. He liked Cam-Cameron but notes that Belly doesn't look upset. If she is, this nugget will cheer her up - their moms are high-key stoned right now. She's in disbelief and he admits that all his favorite snacks are gone. In the kitchen, Laurel and Susannah are in a frenzy and want to make lasagna but don't have the right ingredients. They need to go shopping, ignoring the plethora of food laid out around the kitchen. Jeremiah and Belly come in and the mom fawn over them, calling them beautiful babies. Susannah ushers Jeremiah along so she can paint him while the light's still good. Belly talks to Laurel, who asks for advice on the text Cleveland sent her. Laurel defends herself as the hookup in her car wasn't planned, a statement that grosses Belly off so she plugs her ears, sings to herself, and leaves the kitchen. As Susannah paints Jeremiah and discusses summer with him, Belly opens the door to the patio to plead for Jere's help, as Laurel is trying to braid her hair. Belly goes back inside, with Susannah remarking that he's such a good friend to Belly - like a brother. He's over the commentary and wants to see her work. She thinks it's her best work, and he tries to take it all in. He calls for Belly who comes out to look at it alongside Laurel. It's Picasso and Jackson Pollock's baby. She's mortified then realizes it's absolutely terrible, making them all laugh. He chuckles that this is why old people shouldn't do drugs, earning playful slaps from Laurel and Susannah. It's blatant ageism and they won't stand for it. They leave the brats to walk on the beach. Belly walks down to her room when Jeremiah emerges behind her, wanting to go for a swim. Her mom's been on her about cleaning her room so she can't go. He pouts, asking how come nobody ever wants to play with him. She chuckles and bops his nose, promising later. Once in her room, she puts on moisturizer, lip balm, and perfume. She hears a noise on the patio and looks out her window, seeing Conrad picking up Jeremiah's portrait. She smiles at the sight of him. She goes outside and looks at him, thinking how he's the only boy she's ever thought about. Her whole life it's always been him. She remarks that he's back and then offers to help him clean up. He asks how she and her mom are and they're good. She admits to breaking up with Cam so he asks why. They almost kissed last night but he doesn't remember as he was pretty wasted. She can't believe he's serious. He doesn't know what he wants to say, wondering if he should apologize. She asks if he is but he doesn't know. He thinks about her, she knows he does, but he can't. She's not going to wait for him anymore. As she walks away, she wonders what happened to the boy she loved since she was ten. Belly sits on her bed and cries. She wipes her tears away and then video chats with Taylor, who is at a party, and goes somewhere more quiet to hear her. She pushes a boy away to get some privacy. Belly apologizes for what happened as she just overreacted. She's sorry too as hooking up with her brother on her birthday was a lot. They forgive one another and Taylor knows something is wrong; Belly wishes she were here. That evening, Belly does laps in the pool and then floats on the water. She submerges herself underwater as Jeremiah jumps into the water. He swims in front of her, and the pair makes eye contact before resurfacing. He asks if this is one of her solo swims or if he can join. She lets him join. He sighs, calling her Bells, asking if he's sad she broke up with Cam. She's not because it was the right thing to do. They swim in a circle together to stay afloat. She notices the odd look on his face and splashes at him, asking what he's thinking. It's nothing but everything. She's his best friend, but there have been times he wanted it to be more. They float closer to one another. He didn't say anything because there was always Conrad. Then, this summer, it was Cam, so he was just waiting. She's surprised he was waiting for her. He wonders if she could ever. She smiles and nods, saying yes. He reaches out to take her hand under the water. They kiss, and he picks her up in the water as they continue to kiss passionately, her legs wrapped around him.Susannah always told her that when she was born, she knew Belly was destined for one of her boys. Belly always hoped it would be Conrad. But here she is, kissing Jeremiah Fisher.[5] One morning, Belly lays in her bed as she wakes up. Jeremiah is laying in front of her. He says good morning to her. His presence surprises her, but before she can question him fully, he kisses her. After the kiss, he morphs into Conrad. He tells her that's it's okay, as they are meant to be. Jeremiah, now in the bed, tells her to wait as it's always been them. He questions how she can't see that. Belly wakes up with a start, musing that even her dream life is complicated. The truth is, everything's gotten more complicated since the kiss. She can't stop thinking about, nor will stop invading her dreams - it's invading anything. She comes out of the bathroom in a towel as Jeremiah is coming out of his room. He asks how she slept, and she says it was fine, that she had no dreams. Steven rushes towards the bathroom with a cup of coffee. Jeremiah asks if she's excited about the volleyball tournament. Before she can answer, Steven shouts her name and emerges with a club of Belly's hair. He chastises her for leaving her hair on the bathroom wall as its gross. If she does it again, he's leaving it on her pillow. He tosses it at her and ducks into the bathroom as she shouts after him. Jeremiah softly says that he doesn't want to rush her, but eventually wants to talk about what happened the other night. She stammers out a yes, but with Taylor coming into town and the tournament, they agree to talk after things calm down. That afternoon, Belly sits for Susannah's portrait in her deb gown. She's squirming so Susannah asks if she's okay. Belly blames it on the heat. She only has to sit for a little while longer. Susannah asks if she's ready for the tournament, and Belly is - she wants to raise the most money out of anyone. She is worried about Steven holding up his end. She's representing the charity Susannah helps with, the homeless women's shelter. Susannah is touched and then reminds her to sit still - she just needs a couple more seconds with the frills. After finishing the portrait, Belly makes a smoothie when Conrad enters the kitchen, greeting her. He asks if she's feeling good about the tournament, and she feels ready. If she stays ready, she doesn't have to get ready. She chuckles as that's super cheesy. He suggests she try coming up with a motivational phrase with no cheese. She tries for a moment but can't do it, making them both laugh. He apologizes, not for being cheesy, but for being a jerk the other day and pretending her didn't remember when he did remember everything. He keeps replaying it in his head. He knows it's too little too late but asks if he can take her to the ball. This catches her off-guard. He already knows all the dances so it's not a problem. The doorbell rings so she stammers out that she'll think about it. She goes outside where Taylor waits on the porch. They embrace happily, glad to be reunited. Taylor's ready to kick everyone's asses. Belly takes her inside through the kitchen, where Conrad greets Taylor coolly as he leaves. She asks for the latest between them - there's a lot to catch up on. In her room, Belly gets Taylor up to speed on her relationship dilemma with the brothers. Taylor hopes that Conrad was begging to take her to the ball, or at least was nervous. This just makes it all the more exciting when she tells him no. Belly's silence prompts Taylor to remind her of the bullshit Conrad pulled last week. She reminds her of the emotionally available, fun, sweet, better-looking brother who is at her feet right now waiting for her. Laurel knocks on the door to take them over, denying Belly's eager request to drive. When she walks away, Belly tells Taylor they don't have to talk about it right now - this isn't why she came. Taylor begs to differ, as she's here to get her on Team Jeremiah, of which she is the very enthusiastic CEO. She puts on her sunglasses and proclaims they're ready. At the tournament, team's warm-up for the big events yet to come. Susannah opens the tournament with a speech about Play It Forward. She encourages the attendees to give money to those who are less fortunate, as Play It Forward will match pledges for the winner of the tournament. Taylor and Belly take their places and do their signature shake. They expertly volley and perform, beating out their opponents as Jeremiah and Conrad cheer from the sidelines. Taylor dives for the ball and lands hard on the ground. Belly asks if she's okay, though Taylor says her ankle is twisted. She looks over to the sidelines where Jeremiah is nervously watching. She asks him to please sub, which he eagerly agrees too. He takes Taylor's spot, and she limps off the court, tossing her "Team Belly" shirt to him in the process. She winks at Jeremiah as she passes him. Jeremiah and Belly begin to play, and she teaches him her secret shake. Nicole hands Conrad a drink as he watches them play. Team Belly wins their match, and she jumps into his arms in a victory hug. Team Belly faces off again with new partners, though Jeremiah continues to miss spikes, dives, and returns. Belly grows increasingly frustrated as she wants to win. She tells him to focus and watch the ball, but he's watching her more. She calls a time out and looks over to Conrad who is standing behind the fence. She apologizes to Jeremiah as she has to win this, as they'll match her pledges. He gets it so she gestures to Conrad, telling him that she needs him to sub in. As Jeremiah walks off the court, he tosses the shirt to Conrad, who catches in. The new Team Belly takes their positions. They catch up to their opponents and successfully win with a serve from Conrad. They advance through the remaining teams and come up with their own team gesture. Team Belly faces against Team Shayla - compromised of Shayla and Steven. Both teams are good, exchanging scores and shots, constantly neck-and-neck. Belly scores the winning point and Conrad picks her up in a hug, spinning her around. He puts her down and they twirl about. Susannah rushes out with the trophy and asks Conrad if he asked Belly yet. This confuses Belly, so Susannah explains that he's supposed to ask her to the deb ball, per her request, since it's taking her so long to decide. Laurel runs out to hug Conrad and Belly. On the way out of the tournament, Nicole stops Belly and Taylor to invite them for pizza and rose on her dad's boat. Taylor asks if "Kayla" will be there, with Nicole correcting that "Shayla" has other plans. The girls agree to try and stop by. That evening, Belly and Taylor walk along the shipyard as they discuss Conrad. All Belly has ever wanted was for Conrad to ask her to go somewhere, let alone to an actual ball. But it was because his mom asked him too. It proves Taylor's point that Jelly thrives and Bonrad blows. Belly dismisses the terrible couple's name of "Bonrad", which Taylor uses to further her point. "Jelly" is cute and catchy. She even made a Team Jelly finsta. She shots her the page which has photos of the pair from the tournament. Belly asks what she's supposed to do. She doesn't know how to fully jump into something with Jeremiah if a piece of her heart will always beat for his brother. Taylor admits that a piece of her heart will always beat for Steven, but that doesn't mean she won't allow herself to fall for someone even more incredible if comes along. The girls suddenly stop to look out at the massive yacht where Nicole's party is being held. On the yacht, the party plays "put a finger down". Belly doesn't have any fingers down yet, so the girls try to lower the game from sex to second base, but it doesn't assist Belly. Taylor tells the group to put a finger down if they've ever made out with Jeremiah Fisher, and Belly reluctantly lowers a finger. The group responds to the news with Gigi deeply surprised. She admits Jeremiah is her best friend and about a week ago they kissed in the pool at their house. Nicole always thought something was going on between Belly and Conrad, but surmises she had the wrong brother. Belly fumbles over her response until Taylor dismisses the topic of Jeremiah to get back to the game. She brings up skinny dipping, with Nicole all-but daring Taylor to go skinny dipping in Hopper's Cove. Nicole, Belly, and Taylor go skinny dipping in the cove, splashing each other playfully. Gigi warns them to watch out for jellyfish as she doesn't want to have to pee on any of them. Nicole and Taylor talk about the other girls leaving. As Gigi strips, she sees a cell phone light up with a text message from Conrad. She shouts out to Nicole that she has a text from him. Nicole swims over to read the message, leaving Belly and Taylor in the water. Taylor admits to liking her friends, even Gigi, whose veins just about exploded when he heard about Jeremiah. She gasps, realizing that hashtag "Team JellyFisher" could be a new ship name. She thinks it's cute but Belly chuckles that it's dumb. As headlights hit the water, Taylor looks over her shoulder and exclaims that she knew they were bitches. She swims to the dock as Belly, who is confused, follows her. Taylor reveals that Nicole and Gigi took everything except for Belly's phone, which has an incriminating text from "Conbad". Belly asks what it says so Taylor reads it - "my mom did ask me to ask you to the ball, but that's not why I did it. I did it because I wanted to." Belly becomes flustered and excited until Taylor tells her to concentrate. They can't walk home naked, but Taylor remarks they don't have a choice. Belly points out something they can use for cover. Belly and Taylor walk home with a tarp wrapped around them. Taylor suggests calling Jeremiah, but Belly thinks it would be too much drama. They have to walk two more miles. They chuckle over their misfortune. Taylor points out this is why Conrad's a disaster. He's hot and mysterious which she gets, but everything he touches turns to total shit. Belly doesn't know why she keeps letting him suck her in. Today, he was like the old Conrad, and everything felt like it used to. Taylor remarks that she was under his spell. Belly agrees, but then the spell broke, and she realized she kicked Jeremiah to the side for him. They stop walking and Belly turns to her friend. She used to dream about Conrad and imagine what it would be like and felt safe. She knew it would never come true as he would never feel for her what she felt for him. When she and Jeremiah kissed, it was real - which was scary. Taylor adds that love is supposed to be a little scary. Belly notes that she right, with Taylor joking that she's right 98% of the time. They giggle before Belly decides to make a call. Across town at a party, Jeremiah answers a call from Belly and is surprised by what she says. He immediately gets up and heads out of the party. Taylor and Belly sit on the side of the road as two cars pull up. Jeremiah asks if they're okay, rushing over with Conrad following suit. Taylor sharply asks what Conrad is doing. He explains that Nicole told him what happened. She hopes he told her to watch her back. Conrad hands the bag to Taylor, and they have the boys hold up the blanket while they change. Belly asks Taylor if she's okay with her going with Jeremiah, which is fine. Conrad gets in his car and Taylor climbs into the passenger seat, buckling in. He remarks that it's a crazy night. It didn't have to be, if he could just stop playing all these games and just let her go, it would have been a great night. Conrad starts the car in silence.Over in Jeremiah's car, Belly apologizes for her actions at the tournament. She got into her super competitive zone. She asks if he's mad but he's not, adding that Conrad's the better player anyway. After a moment of silence, he admits to hearing that Conrad might be taking her to the ball. She asks where he heard that, and he admits his mom told him. Belly clarifies that he's not, as she still doesn't have a date. She asks him to pull over, and he obliges. Once the car is stopped, she unbuckles and turns to face him. She thanks him for coming to get her. He'll always come and get her. They look at each for a long moment. She asks if he can hear that - her heart pounding. She picks up his hand and places it on her chest, over her heart, and he agrees that it's beating really fast. They kiss and she guides his hand to her breast. He asks if she's sure and she nods. They kiss again, this time longer, as he fondles. Belly was always so scared for when this moment would come, but weirdly, she's totally fine because it's Jeremiah. When the kiss ends, she asks him to go with her to the deb ball. He merely smiles in response, and they kiss once again. Once at Beck's, Belly lays in bed with Taylor sleeping next to her. Her phone chimes and opens it to find a "u up?" text from Conrad. She gets out of bed and goes to the dock where he's sitting. He greets her but she cuts right to the chase. To stop texting her as it's triggering, as bad things happen when he does. He knows that and is sorry. He hands her the infinity necklace as it's hers. She doesn't have to keep it or anything. She can throw it in the ocean or burn it. A moment passes as he steps closer to her. He admits that he just doesn't want to lose her. She looks up at him then down at the necklace. His hand touches her forearm, and she looks back up at him. She reveals that it's too late and walks away, leaving him with the necklace. He watches her leave, tears brimming in his eyes.[6] The day of the deb ball finally arrives. At Beck's Beach House, Susannah wakes up Belly, who worries she overslept or missed the event. Susannah assures her that she didn't, asking if she's ready for her big day. Belly isn't at all, but Susannah is confident in her and her ability to not trip. She can hold onto Jeremiah's arm and he won't let her fall. Belly laughs softly as she knows that's true. Susannah still can't believe that Belly got him to go with her, as he swore up and down he'd never go to one of these things. He'd do anything for her, they both would. Susannah notices something is off with Belly and asks if she pushed her into this. Belly admits that she did a little, at first, as Belly wants to make her happy. She wants to finish what she started and is kind of proud to show everybody. Susannah holds Belly's face and says she loves her so much, calling her beautiful girl. She advises her to say "prune" when they take her photograph as it'll make her cheekbones look divine. They practice as Susannah explains it's an old trick she learned from Madonna or the Olsen twins. Belly doesn't know who the Olsen twins are, shocking Susannah. She explains they're moguls and fashion icons who owned the early 2000s. They're also sisters with the Scarlet Witch, who Belly knows. Susannah asks Belly to meet her downstairs as there's a surprise for her. Belly goes downstairs to find Laurel and Susannah presenting the dress she wanted in the living room. She's ecstatic and thanks Susannah profusely for getting her the dress. Susannah tells her to think her mom, as it was her idea. She goes to check on Belly's shoes that she put in the freezer to stretch out. Now alone, Belly remarks that she can't believe they got her the dress. Laurel notes that she looks uncomfortable in the other one. Belly didn't think she noticed. Of course she did, she's her mother and knows her. She didn't want her to be a deb at first as it's hard to let her go. She hugs her daughter tightly. In the kitchen, Jeremiah tosses fruit in the air and catches it in his mouth. Belly comes into the kitchen and Conrad quickly hands her some of the good muffins that he picked up this morning. He smiles at her as she looks at them. After a moment, she decides that she's good. Susannah tells Belly she should get going soon. She reminds everyone to stay out of the living room as she's completed their paintings and tonight after the ball, they'll have a big unveiling. She hands Belly's dress bag to Jeremiah and asks him to put it in Laurel's car. He scurries off while Belly turns to Laurel, asking if she's supposed to drive her. Laurel is going with Susannah, so she thought Belly could drive herself. She offers the keys, much to Belly's overwhelming joy. Laurel reminds her to obey the lights, drive slowly, and wait four seconds at each stop sign. Susannah calls out that they'll see her at the club in a few hours. Conrad stops Belly as she's in the hallway and tells her to break a leg. That would be bad since she's supposed to be dancing all night. He just means good luck, as it's a thing people say. For what it's worth, Jere was the right choice. She knows that and leaves.Once outside, she centers herself before smiling at the sight of Jeremiah at the car. He tells her not to be nervous as they'll be the best waltzers out there. That's not why she's nervous, and he asks if she's nervous about seeing the girls. She warily admits that everyone must know what happened now. They probably hate her. He offers to come with her as her hairstylists and bodyguard, but he isn't allowed in the green room as it's girls-only. He assures her that she's got this. He'll be her side the whole night. If anyone gives her shit, he'll say "yo, that's not cool at all", which makes her laugh. He picks up her hand twirls her, simultaneously describing that he'll take her hand and dance away from everybody. She chuckles and he kisses her. He'll see her at the club, telling her to drive safe as he heads back inside. Because of their blissful moment, Belly doesn't see Steven pulling up the driveway. He saw their entire kiss. He gets out of the car and confronts Belly about her and Jeremiah. It just happened, like a week ago, and he thinks she's kidding at first. He feels sick to his stomach. He wonders if they have been sneaking around keeping it a secret from his those whole time, but this has nothing to do with Steven. Steven asks if they're a couple now, but she doesn't know. They've just kissed a few times. He asks about Conrad, who she's been "goo-goo gaga" over since age ten. She strongly states that she isn't ten anymore. He scoffs that she's not far from it. Now annoyed, she reminds him that Shayla's her age, which makes her a kid too, and him a dirtbag. Taylor is also her age, calling him a hypocrite. He concedes to her point as he gets it. He just doesn't want things to get all screwed up. They're like family and it affects way more than just Belly. She knows that, but Steven doesn't get a say in who she dates. She gets to pick, and she picks Jeremiah, so he's just gonna have to trust her. Once alone in the car, Belly celebrates her strength as she starts the car, driving off. At the Country Club, the debs prepare for their big night. Gigi asks for a razor which one of the girls does have. Shayla sees Belly enter and calls over to her, inviting her to sit down with them. She places her at the vanity next to Nicole as they should really talk. Belly apologizes to Nicole about Conrad, but the girl is over it as she's here with somebody else. Belly asks to explain what happened and an annoyed Nicole simply sighs and looks to her. Belly takes a moment before speaking. She's had a crush on Conrad for her whole life, and he's always seen her as his little sister. She though that, this summer, maybe he could like her back. But thing is, what he liked about her is that she liked him. He never actually liked her. She's sorry she was stupid enough to think that he ever could. Nicole admits it isn't Belly's fault that Conrad's a fuckboy, but Belly is kind of a fuckgirl, too. Cam, Conrad, now Jeremiah - she's playing with a lot of hearts. Belly thinks she might have been a little fuckgirl-ish, but swears she is completely over Conrad. Nicole knows that no one really gets over their first love. The evening arrives as Belly puts the final touches on her tiara. She looks in the mirror and smiles. She looks around at all the debs getting ready. She muses over the fact that girls aren't supposed to know if they're pretty or not. They're supposed to wait for other people to tell them, before they're allowed to feel it about themselves. But isn't that bullshit? Because they're all beautiful in their own ways. One-by-one, they pick up their bouquet of red flowers. Belly is the last to pick it up and takes one final look at the green room as she leaves. The debs file up the stairs to their places where they wait for Paige to call their names. Belly smiles as she repeats "prune" to herself. Paige continues to introduce girls with their name, parents, education, accomplishments, and charitable feats. She reaches Belly who looks up to see Jeremiah across the stage waiting. She walks across the stage and joins Jeremiah, looping her arm through his. He calls her a goddess as they walk out to get their photo taken, the lights shining on them. Belly sees Conrad in the crowd and nods to him before trying to make the "prune" face. Laurel wonders why Belly's making that weird face, and Susannah lies that she has no idea. She catches Belly's attention and gestures for her to smile normally. Belly and Jeremiah reach the Conklin-Fisher table and Belly hands her bouquet to Laurel. She hugs her mom before returning to Jeremiah's side. She performs her courtesy then asks Jeremiah how it was. He whispers that the queen would be proud. Laurel gives Susannah the bouquet, which means a lot to Susannah, and she smells it happily. Laurel notices the way Susannah is looking at Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad. She's hit with emotions and excuses herself. Belly wonders where she's going but Jere doesn't know. Paige proclaims that it is her honor to introduce this year's Cousins Beach Country Club debutantes, earning applause from the audience. After several minutes, the lights dim over the dance floor as the spotlights turn on. It's time for the escorts dance. The boys file out onto the dance floor as the girls hoot from the tables. The dance starts with Jere and Steven taking center positions, enjoying the moment. Belly shouts from the table in joy. Steven performs a slide and grinds, earning noises from the crowd and cheers from Shayla. Steven high-fives Jere as he rejoins the troupe. The boys continue their routine before collapsing in a group pose on the floor. Belly stands and claps happily for Jere who smiles at her. He looks past her to his mom, his smile slowly fading. The night passes with small talk amongst the group until a glass clinks to signal the start of the deb dance, so Susannah shushes everyone as it's starting. John rejoins the group. Belly nervously remarks that she doesn't know where Jeremiah is. Susannah urges her to go on the dance floor as she's sure he'll be here. Belly taps on Gigi's shoulder to see if she's seen Jeremiah. Gigi saw him go outside. Susannah asks if Connie has seen his brother, who Conrad remarks was just here a second ago. Belly takes her place on the floor alone, the other debs beginning to whisper and stare at her. She feels as though she's living the dream where she's standing in front of the classroom naked and everyone is staring at her. She asks Shayla and Steven if they've seen Jeremiah and they haven't. She begins to panic just as Conrad stands up from his chair. She looks up from her nervous fidgeting and they lock eyes across the dance floor. He walks up to her and she smiles at him as he joins her, standing a few inches apart. They smile at one another as he admits to knowing most of the steps. He takes her hand and leads her into the line as he takes his place to her left. The dance begins as the deb take their escorts hands, moving in a beautiful waltz. Susannah remarks to Laurel that Belly looks luminous. Laurel knows that to Belly, Conrad is the sun, and when the sun comes out, the stars disappear. They dance together perfectly as Jeremiah walks back inside, averting his eyes when he sees them gracefully dancing. The dance ends with a dip. When the song ends, Belly thanks Conrad, though he thinks he messed up some of the steps. She thinks he was great and he's glad that it was him. As they talk, Jeremiah grabs Conrad's shoulder and, eyes filled with tears, says they have to talk as it's important. It's about their mom - he found something. Conrad deflates and asks to talk about this later. Jere refuses as it's important. Conrad gently tells his brother that it's okay, putting his fingertips on his chest. He gives him a calm, yet emotional look. Jere looks down at his brothers hand and back up again, realizing that Conrad already knows. Jeremiah brims with anger as Conrad's known this whole fucking time and didn't tell him. Conrad starts to explain when Jeremiah punches his brother across the jaw, earning gasps from the crowd. He tackles Conrad to the floor by wrapping his arms around his waist. The brothers fall to the ground as they wrestle about. Susannah rushes over and tells them both to stop it. Jere stands up as Conrad gets his bearings. She demands to know what is going on. Jere looks at his mom tearfully as Conrad looks to him then back to his mom. They know - they both know. Belly is confused as she asks what they know. At Beck's, Belly sobs on the bed as her mom tries to comfort her. Belly feels stupid because all summer long she's been thinking about herself and Susannah was sick and she didn't even know. That's exactly how Susannah wanted it. Laurel's known since the spring. Susannah didn't want to burden the kids with it, as she wanted one last summer with the kids. This sentiment makes Belly sob even harder as Laurel strokes her hair. Belly sniffles and manages to pull herself together long enough to ask about her mom, as she's had to carry it all by herself. Laurel fights back tears as she covers her eyes. She holds her daughter tightly as they cry together. Steven opens the door and asks emotional if Susannah isn't going to get better. Laurel shakes her head, no, earning sobs all around. He joins them in the bed as Laurel holds her children. As the night reaches its ending with everyone now aware of Susannah's diagnosis and her agreement to pursue treatment after all, Laurel calls everyone down for dinner. The family sits around the table and eats while they laugh and converse. Belly reflects on the past few months as she watches her family. There were times this summer when she felt like she didn't know her own heart. But one thing she does know for sure is that, no matter what happens next, she will always come back to this place and these people. The next morning, Conrad and Belly sit on the beach to watch the sun rise. He can't believe that Susannah changed her mind. Belly remarks that he did it, but Conrad knows it was Jere who did it. He looks at her for a long moment then apologizes for being so shitty all summer. She knows he was going through all this alone. She wishes he told her so he didn't have to go through it alone. He almost did, a couple of times. They begin to lean in but she dismisses it as they should go in. There are so many things he wants to say to her, but she won't let him, not right now. He really needs someone right now and she doesn't want to be the kind of person who takes advantage of that. He doesn't just need somebody - he needs her. She doesn't want him to need her; she wants him to want her. They lock eyes as a moment passes. He does want her. He touches the side of her face and then cups her face as they connect in a kiss. Their noses graze after before they kiss again, repeating the motion as the waves crash behind them. In that moment, Belly realized that if this can happen, maybe anything can.[7] |
Season 2[]
Belly lays on the grass outside the beach house. Conrad stands over her and shakes his wet hair on her, making them laugh. She remarks that he's back and he bends down to touch the infinity necklace. Jeremiah gets it, they're into each other. Susannah tells her not to listen to Jere - they're perfect together. Conrad bends over and kisses her. The thump of a book wakes Belly up. She wasn't in Cousins, she and Conrad weren't together, and Susannah was dead. Nothing would ever be the same again. Cory gives her back The Hunger Games which is in French. She knows the English version almost by heart, so it's not that difficult to follow. Escaping to her dreams is easier than being her in memories. It's being awake that's the hard part. Back at cousins, Conrad and Belly walk home from the beach as they talk about their relationship and flirt. She tells him about Jeremiah admitting he has feelings for her and how they kissed. There were moments this summer when she thought there could be something between her and Conrad, but he shut down. He apologizes as he knows it's all his fault. He asks if she wants to be with Jeremiah. Being with Conrad is all Belly's ever wanted. He steps closer to tell her that she's it for him. She doesn't want to hurt Jere, and neither does he. She insists on talking to him first. They walk into the kitchen holding hands and are caught by Susannah. Belly giggles and Susannah remarks that she knew it. Belly heads upstairs and Susannah encourages Conrad to sit. She wants to hear everything, but Conrad insists on changing first. In school, the bell rings to start summer break. Belly heads to her locker. Taylor and the volleyball team walk over. Steven barrels through the halls cheering over high school finally being over. Steven and Taylor banter until Spike walks over to ask what time the grad party starts. Taylor knows because she's dating the singer in the band. She ignores Steven's comments and asks Belly to the party, but she's not sure. Mrs. Holzman calls Belly into her office. She reviewed her end-of-year transcripts, as her grades have slipped and she got her volleyball captainship revoked. Belly thought about applying for Penn State which is a reach. Without volleyball, she'll have to adjust her expectations. The counselor recommends Finch. Belly knows a family friend attending in the fall. She doubts he would give a tour. Last summer, Belly enters Jeremiah's room and sits on his bed. He researched his mom's cancer trial and is feeling hopeful. She's glad that Susannah agreed to do it. He's still mad at Conrad for not telling him about it, but at least it worked out. He thinks they should tell Conrad about them as soon as possible. He doesn't want any secrets. She admits that last night at the beach, she and Conrad started talking and they kissed. They want to tell him right away and he angrily stands up. He accuses her of using him as a distraction while she waits for Conrad. He's glad it finally happened for her. She didn't want to hurt him as he's one of her best friends, but he cuts her off, as she doesn't get to call him that anymore. He warns her that Conrad will break her heart. In the present, Laurel searches for the graduation tickets when she finds a picture of her and Susannah. Belly answers the door as her mom stresses over forgetting to make the lunch reservation. Belly did it for her. Steven tells Laurel to relax as they can't start without him. Belly brings in a gift basket left on the porch and, after reading the card, realizes it's from Susannah. She must've planned it before she died. Steven wishes Susannah could be there, Jeremiah and Conrad too. Laurel insists they were busy, but Steven gives a pointed glare to Belly. On the beach, Belly tearfully tells Conrad about her fight with Jeremiah. He promises that things will be okay. She thinks they should hit pause so she doesn't make things harder for them. The most important thing is for him and Jere to be there for each other and Susannah. Their being together would make things impossible. She can't do that to him. He takes the infinity necklace out of his pocket. No matter what happens, they'll still be infinite. Now, Belly touches the spot where the necklace used to be. Steven thinks Laurel should read the letter from Susannah, but she brushes it off. Once at graduation, Steven gives his valedictorian speech about how everything happens for a reason. Back at the beach house, Susannah calls Belly into Laurel's office. Connie told her about what happened between the three of them. Belly apologizes and feels like she's losing everyone. Susannah assures her that she's not as they'll find their way back to each other eventually. This place will always be there for them. Belly loves this place the same way Susannah does. If anyone can keep the magic going, it's her. Susannah gets up to call the cleaners and Belly embraces her from the side, making her promise not to leave her. Now, Belly sees the empty chairs where Jeremiah and Conrad should be. Steven continues with his speech that while it feels like things are happening to you, you are also happening to the world. So be sure to live today. Everyone claps and he blows a kiss. After the ceremony, Taylor waits with Belly as they talk about Steven's speech. Belly feels like she's been in a nightmare since Susannah died, so Taylor suggests she wake up. Taylor has to leave to help her boyfriend pick out an outfit. Belly asks for help in getting ready for the party tonight, which makes Taylor ecstatic. Steven teases Taylor about Milo playing and his body odor. Steven and Belly walk away as she praises his speech. He's glad they're coming to the party today. He thinks going is better than moping around at home. She tosses her the keys to drive so he can read the DMs from his speech. Once at the restaurant, Steven celebrates going live on TikTok which he explains to John is a good thing. He forwards it to Con and Jere. They read their fortune cookies, though Belly's is rather bleak. The siblings tease over the fortunes. John asks Laurel about her book. Her publisher asked her to do a meet and greet with booksellers but she said no, as it's not necessary. The kids head home to get ready for the party. Taylor is excited that Belly is going to be with her this summer. They start by figuring out what to wear that night. Belly chooses Susannah's earrings to wear. Taylor wants to make her the super hot friend. They disagree over what is super hot and Belly sifts through her closet. She finds the Cousins Rowing shirt. The call from Conrad came the second week of September, three weeks since the last time she'd seen him. It felt like a dream, unreal. Conrad is in his dorm and makes sure it's okay that he called. She assures him they're still friends and friends can talk on the phone. She asks him how college is. It's cool, though his roommate snores louder than she does. He's heard her through the walls for years. Her school is boring and painful because of trig and the torture they're inflicting on students. She can't keep up with the letters. Conrad starts to advise her when Steven walks in looking for his kettlebell. Conrad greets Steven who eventually leaves. Conrad helps her with homework. Now, Taylor tells her to wear the t-shirt but at least crop it. She explains that it's Conrad's. She still gets a pain in her chest when she thinks of him. Taylor shares her grandmother's advice about getting under a new man and they laugh. Later, the three kids go downstairs where Laurel is on her computer. Belly is the sober driver that night and ordered a pizza for Laurel. She tells Belly to have fun. They arrive at the party and Taylor embraces Milo, and he picks her up. Spike greets Steven and asks about the hot ladies he promised. Taylor gestures between her and Belly, but Spike is into older women. Milo walks off to perform and Steven leaves to make the rounds. Taylor and Belly go into the kitchen where they talk to the volleyball players. Marcy and Evelyn gush over the camp until Taylor reveals that Belly's coming. Belly hasn't talked to Coach Shaw yet as she wants to talk to them. She doesn't blame them if they don't want her back. The girls will always want her there. Cory walks past and Taylor teases Belly over it. In a flashback, Conrad and Belly talk on the phone while doing laundry. After a while, he reveals that his dad cheated on his mom with his secretary. He found out last year when he found out his mom's cancer came back. He came home early from school, heard them fighting, and her crying so much. He's exhausted from not being able to turn his brain off, opening up about his anxiety. A scout from Finch is coming to see her and the team practice, which he didn't know. She insists on talking for five more minutes. In the present, Belly follows Cory to the drink station. They talk in French then separate. She goes outside to join Taylor and Steven. They listen to Milo play and talk about the song he's playing. Belly's conversation with Cory took so much effort. She compares it to Taylor and Milo's effortlessness, though Taylor believes they're soulmates. Steven watches Taylor's reaction to Milo ripping his shirt. Steve stands on the stage steps and takes off his shirt to crowd surf. He jumps off the steps but no one catches him, and he crashes into Belly. She decides to get a drink. In a flashback, Belly tells Conrad about her weird thought - that her mom wouldn't have cared if her dad cheated. Nothing about her dad ever excited Laurel. She can't imagine marrying someone who didn't give her fireworks or electric jolts when she sees them. They talk about her parent's divorce. She asks how Jere is doing and he seems good, though he doesn't write back to Belly's texts. She learned that Venus is an evening star for 263 days of the year, disappears for 53 days, then returns as a morning star for 263 days. She tells him it's really bright next to the moon and is looking at it right now. She wishes they could look at it together. He gazes up at the sky from his bench and agrees with her. He couldn't be with someone who didn't make him feel electric either. In the present, Belly approaches Cory to sit on the swings with him. She wonders if Venus is an evening star or a morning star tonight. He's pretty sure Venus is a planet, and she doesn't bother correcting him. The stars look brighter over the beach that she visits in Massachusetts, though she's not going this summer. He invites her and her friends to a party at his house on the fourth. He goes to take a leaf out of her hair and she mistakes the act for trying to kiss her. He pulls away and she awkwardly explains she just got kicked in the head. She becomes flustered and goes to leave. He asks her to put in a good word for him with her friend Marcy. Belly finds Steven, Taylor, and Milo. Her brother punches a hole in the beer can and sprays Belly with it. She's leaving and suggests Steven get a ride with Spike but he can't. They start arguing as she's ruining his party. She's sad because Susannah just died. She doesn't believe he's sad about her death. He accuses her of screwing up which is why Jeremiah and Conrad won't text him back. They wouldn't even come because she made things messy by being selfish. She just had to have Conrad. She was in love, out of her mind in love. Belly storms inside and Taylor catches up with her. Belly feels she messed everything up with the boys, ruined Susannah's funeral, and doesn't get to feel happy. She knows Taylor is trying her best, but she doesn't feel that anyone knows what she's going through. She needs to be alone and tells Taylor to stay at the party. Belly leaves the party and gets in the car. She cries the whole drive home. She remembers Conrad visiting her before Halloween with candy. He wanted to see her, but she thought they would wait. He talked to Jere and he's doing really well, going on dates, and has been on a high since he was made Homecoming King. Jere's over the situation from summer. Conrad doesn't think he could ever get over Belly. Whenever he talks to Belly, he's just happy, and standing in front of her it's torture not being able to kiss her. She kisses him happily. Now, Belly goes inside and Laurel makes her sit for a talk. She didn't know Belly's grades were this bad or that she lost her volleyball captainship. Belly reminds her that Susannah died. This whole year has been hard for her because Laurel hasn't been there. Laurel can't blame Belly because of things that happened. Laurel insists it's not about blame, but rather, the choices Belly made. They argue over responsibility and Belly snaps that she can't be upset about Volleyball when she never came to a single game. She storms upstairs. Belly lies in bed looking at pictures of Susannah, Jeremiah, and Conrad. She knew she would lose Susannah, but didn't think she'd lose them all. They're all linked in her mind, as there can't be one without the others. But now, they're all gone. She tries to sleep but can't, so she picks up her phone and calls Jeremiah. He's playing video games on the couch when he answers. He asks if she's with Conrad. She's not and asks what's going on. Conrad's gone, not answering calls or texts since yesterday, and told his roommate that everything was fucked and took off. He's going to Brown in the morning to look for him. Belly thinks to herself that she would never get Susannah back, but couldn't let the boys go too. She tells Jeremiah she's going with him.[8] In a flashback, Belly escapes from her home and to meet up with Conrad. They have planned a secret getaway to Cousins Beach to spend time together over the Christmas break. On the drive over, Conrad reveals to Belly his decision to switch his major to Biology because he wants to go pre-med. In present, Belly is on a bus headed to Conrad's college campus after Jeremiah told her he's been missing. When she arrives on campus, she meets up with Jeremiah, who is distressed over his brother's sudden disappearance. Things are awkward between them but they keep finding Conrad as their focus. The two visit Conrad's dorm where they run into Conrad's roommate, who is surprised to see two random people in his room. Jeremiah explains that he spoke to him on the phone earlier and the roommate realizes who he is. According to Conrad's roommate, Trusky, Conrad said something about "cousins". Conrad also asked Trusky to take notes in Biology class for him. Jeremiah and Belly are confused that Conrad would put his academic record at risk. Belly and Jeremiah deduce that Conrad is at the house in Cousins Beach so they head out to find him. Jeremiah tells Belly he doesn't need her and he will go on his own. Belly knows Jeremiah more than most people in her life and knows he still wants her to come. She insists and gets in the car to go with him. They sit in uncomfortable silence, the tension between them palpable. Jeremiah avoids discussing his grief, and when a tire goes flat, their frustration erupts into an argument on the side of the road. Jeremiah is still deeply hurt by what transpired last summer, when Belly cheated on him with his own brother and he was forced to pretend everything was fine. In her defense, Belly explains that she thought Jeremiah had moved on from their relationship. She apologizes for abandoning him when he needed her most and they reconcile with a hug. Belly acknowledges her mistakes and desires to make amends as soon as possible. As they get closer to the summer house, Belly's stomach grumbles. Jeremiah tells her they're near one of their favorite restaurants so they stop by to eat something. In a flashback, Belly reminisces about her getaway she had with Conrad. She thought back to the two of them running on the snow-covered beach and sharing intimate moments by the warm fireplace. In present, Belly and Jeremiah finally reach the summer home. Jeremiah runs into the house and finds Conrad. They start arguing. Just as Belly enters the room, Conrad announces that the summer house is up for sale. Conrad is surprised and confused to see Belly there.[9] Belly's confused as to why Adam is selling the house. Adam's not, their aunt Julia is because it legally belongs to her now that Susannah is dead. Jeremiah is mad that Conrad didn't tell him about any of this sooner. He wants Conrad to go back to school, but Conrad refuses as he doesn't care. Jeremiah accuses him of being selfish and leaves. Belly talks to Conrad, explaining they are both worried about him. He found out about the house two days ago. It was like losing his mom all over again. He plans to use his trust fund as a down payment. Belly walks along the beach as she muses over the beauty of this particular sunset and how it matches the beauty in the world ten times over. She can feel the tension of the day drifting away and out to sea. She wants to memorize it all because she never knows when she'll see a place or a person. Jeremiah fails to make his bed, so he lays on it. Belly sits next to him. He's still mad at Conrad, and she chuckles about him sleeping on the bed while half-made. He stops her before she leaves to thank her for coming with him. He doesn't know what went down with her and Conrad, but it couldn't be easy for her to be there. He's glad he doesn't have to do this alone. She's glad she came too. They say goodnight and Belly goes to her room. The hardest part of being there isn't Conrad, but it's facing that Susannah isn't there anymore. She goes for a late-night swim, emerging to find Conrad sitting on the edge. She doesn't pretend she's in the Olympics anymore. He doesn't think she'd notice if the house were on fire when she's swimming, it's like she's somewhere else. That's what she likes about it. She goes back to swimming and when she surfaces, Conrad isn't there. In the morning, Conrad tells Belly and Jeremiah that Julia is here now. It doesn't matter why she's here now because it's serious. He stalks off to make calls. Jeremiah asks Belly to talk some sense into him, as she's the only one who can get through to Conrad. Belly flashes back to last year when she and Conrad prepare for prom. Laurel comes down and Belly reminds Conrad they have to pitch in together for the hotel room so they can hang out with their friends. Laurel teases Belly about it on her way upstairs. Belly asks if he wants her to order his tux, but he's got it. They hug and he tells her about his mom's doctors putting her on new meds, which means the old ones stopped working. Belly knows Laurel gets upset when Susannah isn't doing well, and since she's jovial, that must mean things are okay. The med change could mean Susannah is doing better but needs a smaller dose. The hug again and Belly recalls that while she didn't know it then, she was already losing him. Now, Belly isn't sure Conrad cares what she thinks anymore. She throws away a can of cocoa while she and Jeremiah make a plan to get food and find Aunt Julia. Once int he car, Belly and Jeremiah make a plan on how to woo Aunt Julia. The last time he saw Julia and Skye he was eight. Belly remembers Susannah telling her that Julia made her think she could be an artist. Jeremiah is sure Conrad tried the anger route. Belly muses that he's never been good at putting on a fake happy face. She flashes back to prom night when Laurel is taking pictures of the group while on FaceTime with Susannah. As the girls show the corsages to Susannah, Conrad realizes he forgot Belly's corsage in his dorm fridge. Once at prom, Steven and Taylor dance with their dates. Steven tells Conrad to ask his sister to dance. Conrad finally does, but he's distant while they dance. He asks her to go somewhere else where they can talk, but she wants to stay there for a while. He might go back to school tonight for an exam. He offers to drop her off at the after-prom. He worries he'll ruin the rest of the night for her if he stays. He leads her outside to talk while Steven and Taylor watch. She asks him not to shut her out. He feels like he's disappointing her all day, and he can't go back inside with her. She follows him into the rain because if he won't say it then she will - that they're over. He doesn't want her to leave things like this, but he's the one leaving it like this. She takes off her necklace and runs back to the door, where Steven finds her sobbing. He embraces her as Conrad puts the necklace in his pocket. When she looks over, he's driving out of the parking lot. Now, Belly tells Jeremiah that Conrad pushes people away when he needs them the most. There are only so many times Jere can be pushed before he's done. They pull into a motel and knock on Julia's door with flowers. They greet Julia, who guesses they want to talk about the house. She's having an open house the next day. Belly tries to talk her out of selling a magical place, but it's not personal. Skye joins everyone at the doorway, just before Julia closes the door. In the car, Jeremiah doubts Conrad can talk to their dad about dipping into his trust fund since things are still bad between them. She suggests they talk to Adam together to show a united front, and he reluctantly agrees. She opens up about what happened at regionals to get her captaincy revoked; all she could think about was Susannah. They make a deal - he'll deal with Conrad while she shows up for her team at camp. Jeremiah and Belly arrive at the beach house as Conrad comes back from the beach. Jeremiah reveals they saw Aunt Julia and it didn't go well. Belly takes the groceries inside so the boys can talk. That afternoon, Belly and Jeremiah join Conrad in the dining room. Conrad tells her she can stay as she helped them get this far, and it's as much her house as it is theirs. Adam phones in and Conrad and Jeremiah talk to Adam about the trust funds. He's denying them access to their trusts, as the money is for their futures. Conrad begins to argue with Adam, willing to beg. Belly drifts off as they argue, remembering the call of Susannah's death came early in the morning. Everyone attends Susannah's funeral. Belly watches Jeremiah sob in the front row. The funeral was what she thought it would be. A eulogy from a pastor who never met her, people sobbing who barely knew her, and everything was expected. Until Conrad went to the front of the church to sing a song that Susannah always asked him to sing. Belly made a promise at that moment to be at Conrad's side, because he would need her. Steven and Belly arrive at the luncheon and she sees Jeremiah, asking to talk to him alone. She offers to take a plate of food to him upstairs if he wants to be alone, and he agrees. As she prepares the plates, Laurel criticizes Belly for wearing a dress that's too small. Belly wore it for Susannah, as it was her favorite. Steven offers to take the plate to Jeremiah, and she agrees. John comes over and she asks about Conrad, who he saw go into the rec room. She heads upstairs only to find Conrad with his head in a girl's lap. She quickly leaves and Conrad goes after her. He grabs her arm and she pulls away, angry. He explains the girl was Aubrey, who was just helping her. They argue and exchange hurtful retorts. He knew it was a bad idea to start something with her, a huge mistake, and she hates him. She never wants to see him again and falls when she tries to push past him. Laurel glares at Belly as the spectacle unfolds. Belly leaves the house in tears. Now, Belly refuses to let herself be affected like that by him again. If she did, it would destroy her. Adam looked into everything legally after the funeral, but there was nothing he can do. Jeremiah is hurt that he knew this long about them losing the house. Conrad accuses him of never caring about the house or Mom. Adam refuses to let them buy the house, ending the conversation and telling them to make sure Julia has everything she needs. Jeremiah hangs up on him. Moments later, Taylor and Steven enter with pies and a gleeful surprise. Jeremiah explains that they're losing the house. The foursome takes a seat at the table. Everyone sits in the living room together. Belly asks Conrad how Jere is, learning he's okay, and that Conrad isn't giving up. He thanks her and she joins everyone on the couch. Taylor makes Steven move out of Belly's spot on the couch. Belly wonders if Julia was right about Susannah thinking Cousins was a fantasy place, but she couldn't help but think she could convince everyone else. Conrad puts in the movie Belly chose.[10] In the morning, Belly goes downstairs to find Julia in the kitchen trying to set up for an open house. She has fresh muffins on the counter for the people who attend the open house. Julia is still intent on preparing the house for a quick sale. Conrad, Belly, and Jeremiah try to stop Julia from selling the house. Conrad tells Julia she is the problem but Julia brushes him off. The realtor shows up at the door and Belly tells her that Julia decided to cancel the open house. Julia runs out to assure the realtor that the open house will continue. However, the air conditioning breaks down and it's a scorching hot day, making it impossible for Julia to show the house without first fixing the air conditioner. She encourages the kids to go out while she handles it. Belly comes up with a plan to distract the others by suggesting they head to the boardwalk and play the games they used to enjoy in their younger days. She invites Skye to join them, hoping that immersing her in the nostalgic fun will make her understand the charm of Cousins and the beach house, thus convincing her mother to change her mind about selling. As the games progress, a friendly competition ensues between the girls and boys. Belly, Taylor, and Skye face off against Steven, Jeremiah, and Conrad. They play back to back games, like laser tag, Dance revolution, and Shoot Your Shot. Belly has some flashbacks of being on the boardwalk with Conrad when she was younger. She remembers him trying to flirt with another girl there and feeling heartbroken watching. At the time, Conrad only saw Belly as a kid. Conrad won her a stuffed animal at one of the boardwalk games. Back at the boardwalk after Belly's team loses the competition, she has to ride the Tower of Terror. She is visibly terrified but Jeremiah kindly offers his support, assuring her that she doesn't have to face it alone. They sit side by side, tightly holding each other's hands as the ride gradually ascends and then suddenly drops with a jolt. They seem to have fun by the end of the ride, as the others watch on. Taylor thinks she seems something between Belly and Jeremiah and subtly mentions something to Belly. After an entire day of fun and games, the kids return home, only to be met with a shocking discovery. The beach house has been stripped of everything -furniture, art, and everything that reminded them of Susannah. They now face the harsh reality that the beach house might be gone forever.[11] The teens stand in the empty house. Jeremiah checks the bedrooms, which have been cleared out - even Susannah's. Julia comes into the kitchen and Conrad confronts her. After they argue, Conrad leaves while Jeremiah glares at Julia before leaving, and Belly follows him. Julia learns from Skye that everyone knows about Shitmas now. The teens gather on the front lawn as Conrad shouts to Jeremiah that their father, who won't answer the phone, doesn't care about them. They try to find somewhere to stay since Conrad can't sleep in the house. Cam would invite them to stay with him, but his house is small. Jere takes them to the Country Club to crash for the night. Jeremiah's key card from last summer doesn't work so Cam offers to use his mom's key code. She's the restaurant manger so as long as they don't make any mess they'll be fine. Skye and Cam go on snack patrol while Steven and Taylor go in search of linens. Jeremiah knows a place they can sleep. Belly stays back with Conrad, who feels guilty over going to the boardwalk. He's losing hope but she assures him it's not over and they'll figure something out. Jeremiah watches them from across the room before walking away. Belly runs up behind Jere having opted not to go to the kitchen with Conrad. She would rather roam with him on their adventure to the screen room. Jeremiah and Belly sit in the screen room. He goes into the unlocked projection booth and gets it working. They do shadow puppets in the light, until his wolf eats her rabbit. Their hands hold. The movie starts which breaks them apart. They start talking about movies and their memories with Susannah. She drank the green juice Jere made her out of a Twizzlers straw, which is something Belly taught her. She gets a can of soda and Twizzlers, bringing it over so they can have "sharesies", drinking at the same time. His movie nights with Susannah made him think about Belly. He missed her so much and wanted to call her. Belly wished he had, because she would answered, and would have come. He thinks it would have made things harder. Later, Skye, Cam, and Conrad join Belly and Jeremiah in the screen room. Conrad offers to go look for Steven, so Jeremiah joins him. In a flashback to Thanksgiving, Jeremiah finishes setting the table while Belly's happy to celebrate with everyone this year. The Conklin-Fisher's sit at the table. Jeremiah notices Conrad holding Belly's hand. Susannah has them go around the table to say what they're thankful for. Jeremiah offers to go last. Jere came back inside and found Belly and Conrad giggling together. Laurel called her upstairs to look through more '90s clothes. In the screen room, everyone watched a movie while Cam fretted over the mess Steven and Taylor made. Taylor wanted to make a bong out of an apple. Jeremiah offered to take everything outside before Cam had a stroke. Cam drove a golf cart with Conrad in the passenger seat while Jeremiah and Steven bounced on the bank. Taylor, Skye, and Belly walked behind them as Taylor tried to make the bong. Skye offered to help. Belly sensed a vibe between Taylor and Steven, but Taylor denied it. They talked about love and decided to make a pact to leave first loves in the past where it belonged. Taylor knew there was something between Belly and Jeremiah, and she agreed there was a charge. Skye finished the apple bong as the boys found a place to sleep on the green. Taylor smoked weed and told Belly to text coach about camp. Belly started but freaked out, so Taylor took the phone and did it herself. Steven came over to play Truth or Dare; Belly dared him to eat the apple bong. The boys came over and Conrad admitted he saw himself in Cousins in the next 10 years. Skye dared Belly to kiss Jeremiah. Jere brushed off the idea of a kiss as being childish. Skye asked Cam is biggest regret and he opened up about his sister who died. He told Jeremiah that it did get easier. The night winds down and they all fall asleep. Belly reads a text from Coach advising her not to rejoin the team. She walks over to Jeremiah who is by the golf cart. She wonders why he turned down the Truth or Dare kiss, but he asks her to stop. If he kisses her, he's not sure he can ever stop. Jeremiah tells Belly it's complicated. He asks if his mom told her about the Amelia Earhart quote that she quoted earlier. Belly saw it on Jeremiah's graduation cap. When Laurel went she recorded the ceremony so Belly could see him graduate. She wanted to be there even if it was just through a phone. They walk over to their sleeping arrangements and lay next to each other. Jeremiah wakes up in the morning and Steven has his arm around Taylor. She shakes him off. Cam's mom comes over and Cam quickly explains the situation while he and Belly promise to all clean. The teens pull up to the house as Julia and the realtor are leaving. Julia wishes they had gone home. It's not their house anymore and it won't be hers for long, either. The buyers made an offer and she's officially accepted. The house is sold.[12] After Julia informs the kids that the house is sold, Skye confronts her about her decision to sell. Julia confesses that she has already finalized a deal and is heading to Boston to sign the house over to its new owners, feeling relieved that the process will finally be concluded. Skye is unhappy with the decision. Their time spent with cousins and new friends in Cousins has made Skye see the house in a new light, and they wish their mother would reconsider and give it more time before selling. Skye urges their mother to reconsider, but Julia tells them sorry and leaves. Conrad and the others feel defeated and contemplate leaving the house. Belly suggests they bid it farewell in a grand way. They decide to throw a retro-themed party, knowing Susannah would have loved it. Everyone gets into motion -shopping for the party, building playlists, and inviting friends. Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah go shopping for the party. After Conrad tries to buy alcohol with a fake ID and fails and so does Jeremiah, Belly surprises them when she successfully convinces Jumper to sell beer to them. They go to another store to buy more party supplies. At that store, Belly apologizes to Conrad for what happened at his mother's funeral. Conrad finally tells her about his panic attacks and says he wished she would have been the one finding him when he had a panic attack at the funeral. At the party, Cam is the DJ. Everyone dances, drinks, and is having a good time. belly is still caught in between Jeremiah and Conrad. She and Jeremiah almost share a kiss but are interrupted by the fight between Steven and Milo. Later, Skye reveals that Jules has added a new condition to the house sale – it will only be sold to a buyer willing to let the Fishers rent it for a week every summer. Jeremiah is thrilled by the idea of returning to the house, but Conrad believes they should move on. This disagreement leads to a heated argument between Conrad and Jeremiah. Jeremiah accuses Conrad of being a coward, giving up too easily when faced with challenges. He mentions how Conrad came to him seeking advice about Belly and wanting to be with her, which surprises Belly and saddens her about their past relationship. Emotionally charged, Belly confronts Conrad about why he gave up on their relationship so easily, feeling that he didn't fight hard enough for them. Feeling frustrated with Conrad, Belly returns to the party. She sees Jeremiah across the room and turns back to look at Conrad. She breaks down and starts crying. She calls her mom to tell her she's in Cousins, that they are going to lose the house, and that she fears the brothers won't speak to each other again.[13] Laurel wakes Belly up, having gotten her panicked voicemail, which Belly doesn't remember leaving. Laurel is furious that Belly lied for days and is done with her. She won't let Belly use Susannah as an excuse anymore. They have a brutal argument that ends with Laurel smacking Belly across the face for saying that Susannah wouldn't forgive Laurel for abandoning her boys. Belly runs out of the room and the Fisher boys emerge from their room. Jeremiah finds Belly on the beach and gives her company at her request. He's sorry about what happened with Laurel. Belly believes everything's a mess. She knew that Jeremiah and Conrad talked in the Fall about her, but she had no idea that he came to Jeremiah to beg for his blessing. Jeremiah doesn't want to talk about it right now, and she apologizes. She keeps trying to make things right but is messing up. He assures her it's not just her. He and Conrad are mad at each other for a lot of things. She starts to defend Conrad but Jeremiah asks her not to. She tells Jeremiah that whatever he thinks he saw last night, he's wrong. There's nothing left between her and Conrad. Jeremiah knows there will always be something between them. Belly wonders if her mom was right and maybe they should all go home. Jeremiah and Belly walk back to the house to find Laurel on the porch, wanting to talk. Jeremiah heads inside to start cleaning. Laurel and Belly sit on the porch. Laurel apologizes for hitting her, which is something she never did before. Everything Belly said before was right - she has been angry that Susannah isn't there anymore. She didn't let herself feel it because if she let it out, all the other stuff would come out too, which Belly understands. Laurel thought she was doing the right thing by being strong for everyone, but was wrong. She should have been there for Belly or let someone be there for her. Belly tearfully asks if Laurel forgives her, which is an instant yes. They embrace each other, have forgiven one another, and cry together. Later in the day, Taylor decides to leave as the situation is more of a family thing. She asks Steven to drive her to the bus station, but he refuses, instead giving her his car keys to drive herself. When he walks off, Belly asks what the situation is between them. Taylor isn't sure yet but knows Steven's obsessed with her. She tries to convince Belly to come to camp, which an entering Jeremiah questions. He tells her not to worry about the house as they'll figure it out. She wants to see it through and he leaves the room. Taylor wants to make sure Belly is looking after her heart and not just others. Belly assures her that she's got it. Julia comes into the house as everyone is cleaning. She's mortified over the condition of the house. Laurel asks Julia if they can chat outside while the kids clean up. When they come back inside, Julia's decided to pull out of the sale, which thrills everyone. Jeremiah picks up Belly in a hug while Skye embraces their mom. However, they still have to convince Adam to buy the house from Julia. Conrad takes the trash out at the same time as Belly. He opens the lid for her and they stand awkwardly. She's almost afraid to say it out loud, but she's feeling hopeful. Her mom's good at schooling Adam. Conrad thanks her for calling Laurel, as it's good to have her helping out. He wants to talk about last night, which was a blur for her. He admits she's right that he shouldn't have ended things the way he did. He thought he was doing the right thing by her. His going through a lot wasn't an excuse. He hates the thought of her regretting what they did the night spent at the house. It hurts to think about that night, but she doesn't regret that or any of the times they were together. She loved him and she knows he loved her too. If he could go back and do things differently, he would. They both hurt each other a lot and don't want to hurt each other again. She wants to at least try not to hurt each other again, offering to be friends. They hug before she goes back inside. Adam walks into the house and greets Laurel in the kitchen. The kids are giving them space so they can have an adult conversation about the house. Unbeknownst to them, the kids are around the corner, eavesdropping. Adam thinks Laurel came all this way to back him up, but she didn't. Julia comes into the kitchen to announce she changed her mind about the sale. As the conversation heats up, Conrad is ready to go in, but Jeremiah grabs his arm. He suggests Conrad let someone else try to solve a problem for once. Adam isn't going to let the boys squander their trust to let them buy the house. Laurel wants him to move some money around to buy it for them for fair market value. Laurel tries to interject, but Adam tells her to shut up as she's not part of this house. Conrad walks out of the other room to confront his father. Adam thought it would be best for everyone to let this place go. Being there is hard for him because Susannah is everyone there. Laurel reminds Adam how much Susannah loved him, and that she set her mind on Adam and making the house special for their kids. Jeremiah asks him to please do this. Adam won't let them use their trusts, but if they sell the Boston house it could give them enough, as he can't afford both houses. He asks if this is what they want, and the boys agree that it is. Skye and Belly talk on the way out of the house about Cam, and Skye is “Team Cam-Cameron”. Laurel hopes Julia and Skye come out soon, and Julia is happy about the idea. Jeremiah asks Laurel to let the kids stay for one more night to help Conrad study for his finals, and she agrees. Julia gives Laurel the hotel room for the night. Conrad gives Skye food as a parting gift. He tells Belly she doesn't have to do this. She knows how much Stanford means to him after he made her proof his essay five times. She wants to help. He goes back inside while she silently vows this will be the last thing she does for Conrad Fisher. Once he's there, maybe they can finally let each other go. Steven eats the bacon on the counter which Jeremiah reminds him has been sitting out for a long time. Conrad comes in, exhausted, and they could all pass out on the counter. Belly tries to rally everyone but the boys want a power nap. Jeremiah appeals to her for a one-hour power nap. He calls her an angel, but she tells him to go before she changes her mind. While the Fisher boys sleep, Belly pulls Steven out for a mission. That night, Belly wakes up Conrad with a spray bottle, but it doesn't work on Jere, who Conrad remarks can sleep through a tidal wave. She dumps the water on his head instead. He rolls over with a smile to say good morning. She let him sleep for an extra half hour. He wraps himself over her back as she leads him to the kitchen. The counter is covered in McDonald's food, coffee, and treats as part of an award system. Conrad asks what else he gets, but Belly laments that it's just the food. The group launches into their study session and Belly tosses out burgers to everyone when Conrad answers correctly. When everyone's energy dips, Belly plays a song Susannah loved and pulls Conrad up for a dance break. He refuses as he doesn't dance. Jeremiah, Steven, and Belly dance it out and Conrad eventually joins in. Belly never would have pictured this. It's different than if Susannah was here, but she thinks Susannah would approve. It feels pretty magical to her. Belly wakes up in the middle of the night and sees Jeremiah, asleep on a blow-up pool float. She notices Conrad is missing and finds him outside on a pool chair. He remarks on Venus being an evening star, which is giving him hope. It's hard knowing how much he messed up with school. She knows he'll figure it out. If he's lucky enough to get another chance, they'll do anything they can not to mess it up again. She looks over at the house and starts telling him about her having feelings, only to realize he's asleep. In the morning, Jeremiah asks Belly if she's ready to go. She is but they have to do one more thing. The kids pose for a picture in front of the beach house. Jeremiah and Belly run off. Laurel gives Belly a tray of coffee for her drive to Brown. She's not off the hook for lying, but Laurel is proud of her and knows Beck would be too. They hug and Belly bellows that she's coming with them. Steven tells Belly that he's proud of her and that she did well. He reminds her to trust her gut in every regard. The group makes a plan to get back to the beach house for the fourth. The guys look at Belly and want to do a belly flop one last time. She agrees and they carry her to the pool, throwing her in. Jeremiah jumps in after her, and it isn't long before Steven and Conrad join them. They splash each other, play, and hold hands. Conrad, Jeremiah, and Belly get into the car to start their drive to Brown. She looks out the window at the Beach House. Once on the highway, Jeremiah asks if she's cold but she likes it chilly. Conrad gives her a Brown sweatshirt that she puts on. She decides to play a song to bring up the mood. She and Jeremiah sing along while Conrad grumpily tries to study in the backseat. He eventually smiles and joins them in the song, calling them idiots. They arrive at Brown where Jeremiah and Belly wish Conrad luck. Jeremiah offers to show Belly around Finch since her guidance counselor said it was a good idea for her. She's surprised he remembered. They spend the afternoon walking around Finch, doing cartwheels, selfies, piggyback rides, and laughing in the quad. She buys a Finch sweatshirt and they go to the trophy room. He asks if she's picturing one with her name on it, and she is. She pulls him into the gym to look at the volleyball championships. He knows she misses playing and she admits to it. She'll never be a super genius like Steven, but volleyball was something she was really good at. He knows that she is really good and could play at Finch if she wanted to. She decides to ask her coach if she can get back on the team when she gets back. He calls her hard to resist. He has selfish reasons for wanting to see her play at Finch, too. She could see herself there. She can see the two of them running around campus and him coming to all her games. Their late-night study sessions with two AM pizza. They share a moment before he suggests they go back. Jeremiah is quiet during the drive back. Once in the parking lot, they both lean against the car. Belly asks if he'll ever give her a second chance. If he falls for her again, he doesn't think he could take it if she changes her mind like last time. She wouldn't do that because it's different now. They aren't the same people they were - they grew up. She spent so much of her life dreaming of what it would be like to be with Conrad. But dreams aren't real, and now she wants something real. She turns his head to her. She wants him and asks if he he still, and he does. They kiss passionately against the car until a clearing throat stops them. They look up to see Conrad staring at them.[14] Conrad coughs to alert them of his presence. He rushes away, hurt and confused. Belly pursues him to try and talk but Conrad pushes her away. He even asks her if she was just trying to make him jealous. Returning to his dorm, Conrad packs his belongings. Jeremiah and Belly linger, awaiting his return for the lengthy journey home. Eventually, Conrad reappears. Initially, he feigns normalcy but then starts to be passive-aggressive, directing hurtful comments towards Jeremiah and Belly. Caught in traffic amid a big storm, they pause for snacks. The store clerk tells them that there is an imminent highway closure due to a flood warning. They book the last room available at a nearby motel. There is only one bed so the boys give it to Belly and they sleep on the floor. Jeremiah tells Belly Conrad's feelings are still there for her. He urges her to talk to him. At the motel, Belly wakes up and looks for Jeremiah who is gone. She assumed he just left but she finds him outside with a bag full of food for their breakfast. Belly signals to Jeremiah that she’s chosen him. They share a passionate kiss. Belly plans to tell her decision to Conrad, but he's already anticipated it. He suggests they remain friends. They all commit to reuniting at the beach house for Fourth of July festivities. Conrad catches a bus to go back to Cousins Beach. Jeremiah and Belly take the car. The two new couples meet up outside the volleyball camp. Jeremiah and Belly show up with their hands intertwined. Taylor is thrilled to see "Jellyfish" together. Taylor and Steven exhibit a similar connection, though less overtly affectionate. Belly apologizes to her coach and teammates, who welcome her back with open arms. Jeremiah supports her from the sidelines.[15] |
Personality[]
Belly is a sweet, kind, spunky teenager who longs for the freedom that comes with being older. She's been a sheltered young girl for her entire life, never going to parties and opting to stay home instead. The summer of her sixteenth birthday she vows to change her life and finally break out of her shell. She vocalizes what she wants, goes out and gets it, and does what she wants. While this freedom helps her grow, she is rather impulsive and doesn't always weigh the consequences of her actions.
Physical Appearance[]
Belly is a biracial teenager with a Korean mother and a white father. Her long hair cuts off at the middle of her back and is usually kept in a straight style. Her hair, like her eyes, is a dark brown. She has pale skin and a slim figure. Many have complimented her on how beautiful she is, one such instance being when Belly enters the Fishers' beach house and greets Susannah, who is in visible shock. This is followed with Susannah mouthing the words "She's gorgeous" to Laurel who responds with a hushed "I know."
Relationships[]
Laurel Park[]
Laurel is Belly's only daughter and, as such, they have a complicated relationship.
Steven Conklin[]
Steven is Belly's older brother. They have a sarcastic, banter-filled, and protective relationship over one another. Steven wants to keep her safe during the summer, though his own escapades often take him away from his task. He takes every chance he gets to tease her or insult her, though with a joking tone. Despite being opposites, they experience similar life events in the same time frames. In fact, they both hooked up with each other's best friend over the summer; Steven made out with Taylor because he felt insecure over his relationship with Shayla, while Belly explored a connection to Jeremiah. They also both attended the debutante ball for the first season with their summer romances, despite Steven initially thinking the ball was a stupid thing for Belly to do.
Susannah Fisher[]
Susannah was the best friend of Belly's mother, Laurel. As such, Susannah was always in Belly's life. They had a close relationship that mirrored that of a mother-daughter. Susannah saw Belly her "special girl" and the daughter she never had. The Fisher and Conklin families would spend every summer at Susannah's beach house together. Belly saw the magic in the beach house the same way Susannah did. Susannah always believed that Belly would end up with one of her boys. Belly was devastated when Susannah's cancer returned, and grieved deeply when she died.
Conrad Fisher[]
- Main article: Belly and Conrad
Belly and Conrad are childhood best friends, though she harbored a secret crush and spent her early years waiting for him to see her as more than just a friend. She glamourized every interaction they had and longed for more. During her sixteenth visit to Cousins, Belly had grown up and described herself as "turning pretty". She caught the attention of Conrad for the first time, though he wasn't the light-hearted boy she used to know. His moody and distant attitude quickly isolated the friends, though he tried to open up to her a few times but they were always interrupted. Belly also wanted this Summer to be different, and decided to be more social, though Conrad wanted to shield her from the dangers of partying. She struck up a brief romance with Cam, a boy she knew briefly when they were children. Conrad watched their relationship and even convinced Steven and Jeremiah to crash her first date. She decided to become a debutante, an idea that Conrad disliked as it "wasn't her", though she did it anyway. At a party, Belly admitted to liking Conrad, though she was drunk at the time. Belly, now alone on the dance floor without an escort, was saved at the last minute by Conrad who swept her away in the waltz. Jeremiah returned to watch them dance and pretended that he had been sick, but when he learned Conrad already knew of Susannah's diagnosis, they two fought on the dance floor. The next morning, Belly spoke with Conrad who had known of the diagnosis for a while. They had a heart-to-heart and they kissed.
Jeremiah Fisher[]
- Main article: Belly and Jeremiah
Belly and Jeremiah are childhood best friends. They have known each other since they were children, with Belly visiting Cousins Beach each Summer. He knew of her not-so-secret crush on his brother Conrad, but kept things light-hearted between them. They developed a secret wall know to signal when the other was still awake at night. She fell in love with swimming so they would swim in the beach together on the first day of her arrival each year. Jeremiah was surprised at her transformation during the Summer of her sixteenth birthday, and they instantly fell into a rhythm, though he sought to shield her from the boys antics of partying. When he realized she wanted to be out and grow, he supported her decisions. He thought her being a deb was odd but supported it, even walking her to classes and lightening up the rehearsals. He became her drivers ed teacher for the Summer, giving her a good luck charm for her driver's test. Belly briefly dated Cam, which Jeremiah was surprised to learn about, though he took the boy under his wing as a friend. Their friendship exuded such an energy that Cam asked her if something was going on between the two, though she instantly corrected that must have meant Conrad, but he was certain that Jeremiah was the one he questioned. She shot it down as the pair were just friends, and Jeremiah flirted with everyone. On the Fourth of July, Jeremiah watched Conrad and Belly nearly kiss on the dock, but sent off a firework to stop the interaction. He lied the next day that he didn't know they were out there. When things between the two ended, Jeremiah expressed sympathy for Belly, who admitted it was for the best. He joined her in the pool for a late night swim and confessed that she's his best friend but there were times he wanted it to be more, but there was always Conrad. This Summer it was Cam and he was just waiting for her. He asks if she could ever feel the same way, and she admitted she could. They shared a kiss in the pool. Belly's friend Taylor also rooted for her and Jeremiah, believing he was the best choice for Belly, instead of the ever-moody Conrad. She even nicknamed the pair "Jelly". At the annual volleyball charity competition, Taylor faked an injury so Jeremiah could sub in for her. The pair played well together, and came up with a handshake, though Jeremiah wasn't skilled enough to carry the game to win. She instead subbed him out for Conrad, who ultimately helped her win, sidelining Jeremiah. Belly confessed to Taylor that she struggled to jump into a relationship with Jeremiah if a part of her heart still beat for his brother. The girls went skinny dipping one night when Nicole saw a text from Conrad to Belly. He wanted to be her escort the dance, and not just because his mom asked him too. This conflicts with Conrad's growing relationship with Nicole, who assumed they would be going together. The girls stole Taylor and Belly's clothes and left them naked in the water. Belly eventually called Jeremiah for help, and both brothers arrived, having heard about the situation from Nicole. Belly went home with Jeremiah and apologized for kicking him out of the competition, but he understood as it was for charity. He heard Conrad was taking her to the ball but she corrected that he wasn't. She then asked him to the deb ball and he happily agreed, despite his general disliking for fancy events. They made out in his car with some light fondling. The day of the deb ball, Susannah chuckled over the irony of Jeremiah taking her, but conceded that both of her boys would do anything for Belly. Meanwhile, Steven learned of the pair low-key dating and lashed out at Belly who was firm in her choices. He later reprimanded Jeremiah who insisted that he is serious about Belly and hadn't flirted with anyone since she became available. At the dance, Belly happily made her introduction with Jeremiah and watched him gleefully in the escort dance. However, Jeremiah had become suspicious of his mom throughout the Summer and stole her phone to confirm his greatest fear - she had cancer. He spent the dance outside crying at the realization and her refusal of treatment. |
Cam[]
- Main article: Belly and Cam
Belly and Cam were in a childhood play together, where she played Flavia and he played Sextus. Years later, they reunite at a bonfire on Cousins Beach, where they connect over being the outcasts there. He sees that she's cold and offers his hoodie which she accepts after some playful banter. Their relationship was brief, as they only dated for a few weeks in the beginning of the summer, going on bike rides, a movie date and a picnic. She ultimately ended their relationship as she wasn't feeling a spark, and had simmering feelings for other boys, though she didn't tell him the latter point. He understood her decision, despite being disappointed.
